    Description of The Strangers [Blu-ray]:
A lean, briskly paced and exceptionally creepy thriller, The Strangers earns its scares the old-fashioned way: through atmosphere, sound design, and a simple yet undeniably upsetting central premise that allows for maximum tension throughout its running time. Attractive young lovers Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are already having a bad day--she's turned down his marriage proposal--before a knock on the door in the middle of the night announces a full-fledged siege on their remote vacation home by a trio of masked assailants. The film's first third delivers the most consistent shivers as the visitors make their presence and intentions known to Tyler; the second half grows more frantic and bloody before a gruesome finale that may leave viewers either rattled to their core or bothered by its empty nihilism. Speedman is fine as the downtrodden male lead (who's seen tucking into a carton of ice cream after being rejected), but it's Tyler who impresses the most by s! houldering the lion's share of the terror. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favor of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chiller Them (which shares its "inspired by a true story" origin) and Michael Haneke's Funny Games, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy (The Hills Have Eyes) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. On a completely unrelated note, LP fanatics should appreciate how both the film's heroes and villains share an affinity for folk and country music on vinyl. --Paul Gaita

    The Strangers [Blu-ray] Reviews:
    Boring 1 Star Review
2009-10-29 - This movie was not scary and not very good. I give in -5 stars. Save your money. If you want to watch it wait for cable.

Scary in parts but based on what true event?? 3 Star Review
2009-10-02 - I found this movie to be scary in some parts and dragging in others. It was a little silly in that the main character has a shotgun and of course doesn't use it to his advantage. What I don't understand is that this movie claims to be based on real events. Well I did some research after seeing the movie and can't find anything about this occurrence. What true event is the movie based on? If someone knows, please enlighten us.

Scary because it can happen 5 Star Review
2009-07-13 - This movie is scary because this can happen. Just the thought of someone crazy trying this out because the saw it on the movie was enough for me to really consider buying a firearm. The story this movie is based off of is pretty disturbing.

i am suing for wasted time. 1 Star Review
2009-05-21 - this was nothing more than the typical cliche hollywood horror movie. the plot was weak, and painfully predictable.

What a waste!. 1 Star Review
2009-02-06 - The Strangers starring Scot Speedman and Liv Tyler was a total borefest. This was quite a dull experience, the first half where absolutely nothing happens almost had me pressing the fast forward button but somehow I didn't and just wanted to see if the rest of the film was going to get better but of course it didn't. The director spends too much time getting us to like the couple in the movie, but honestly does a terrible job. The opening sets the stage for what might look like a terrific movie. A 911 call saying "there is blood everywhere". Really? After seeing the movie I expect to only see blood in two places, not exactly everywhere.

The movie has no plot and is completely hard to get involved with any of the characters since most of the time they just end up staring into space, or just wondering off late at night leaving the other person alone and defenseless. The story begins by developing the relationship between it's two stars, then separating them and introducing the terror. This worked at first in it's ability to set up and keep the viewers in suspense. Unfortunately, after we have established what is taking place, the story seems to slow down and eventually fizzles out. The second half of the film is filled with horror movie cliché's and cheap scare tactics that fall flat on it's face, almost to the point of boredom. Don't bother with this film, if you want better suspense/horror flicks then check out Vacancy, Silence of The Lambs, Eden Lake or Funny Games (the original not the remake) instead. Any of those other enjoyable and creepy films would be a hell of alot better then wasting your time with this.
