Editorial Review:
May 1889 - A chance meeting in the Turkish baths leads consulting detective Lady Evangeline St. Claire and her lover, Rhiannon Moore, to a mystery - the murder of a priest and the theft of a painting that proves to be more than a mere work of art. A series of clues left by a long-dead artist puts the pair on the trail of one of history's great lost treasures and the crime that helped topple a monarchy. Travelling to Paris and L'Exposition Universelle, Evangeline and Rhiannon find that matters are not as straightforward as they appear. As they continue to be haunted by a ghost from Evangeline's past, the partners may never recover from the events leading to the revelation of...THE MADONNA OF THE SORROWS.
The Madonna of the Sorrows, 2nd edition Reviews:
Wow!
2007-11-21 - I enjoyed Black by Gaslight well enough to look forward to the next in the series, but Madonna of the Sorrows really blew me away.
The heroines I had come to love were back, and better developed. Adams's storytelling, which is always good, was even sharper, more sophisticated, and harder hitting. Her attention to historical detail was spot on, as ever.
The one thing that bothered me in the first book was the unshakability of the heroines' relationship, but Madonna challenges even this. It leaves nothing sacred.
Outstanding. A breathless ride. I'm very much looking forward to the next one. I just wish there were more than five stars.
Excellent continuation of this series
2007-02-20 - I have to say that I was very pleased with this effort. I have read all of the online parts to this series, and this one fits in perfectly. Adams gives a real sense of history and immediacy in this one!
Disappointed
2007-01-19 - I have read all of the on-line stories and the first book in the Gaslight series and I was really looking forward to the second book. With any series that I read, I form a bond with the characters which includes expectations about what they will do or not do and I need to be able to relate to the lead characters to stay interested in the story. In this book, Lina exhibits personality traits and self destructive behaviors that were not consistant with her personality charactaristics in previous books. I stopped reading and went to the end of the book to see where the author was going. The end of the book reminds me of the old "B" thrillers they used to show on the Saturday afternoon movies. Drop somebody off a cliff so the kids would come back the next week to see the next installment. I am sure that a sequel is in the works but I am not interested.
