Editorial Review:
Considered by many to be the Material Girl's most mature effort of the '80s, Like a Prayer upped the ante of controversy with its gospel-infused title track and the singer's emotional confessions throughout. It also unveiled the hit "Express Yourself," which ushered in the era of Madonna as a "stainless steel sexual icon." Musically, Prayer showcased her burgeoning songwriting prowess, with the beautiful "Oh Father" and the perky pop of "Cherish." Besides a throw-away collaboration with Prince ("This Is Not a Love Song"), the CD stands as one of her strongest works, eschewing the strong dance beat influences from her past--she saved that for the remixes--and concentrating instead on melody and structure. Like a Prayer also gave a hint of things to come with the delightful "Dear Jessie" displaying a maternal side worthy of her name. --Steve Gdula

Madonna ... LIKE A PRAYER (1989) 5 Star Review
2009-09-30 - In March of 1989, Madonna released her fifth album entitled, LIKE A PRAYER. This album is the album that made Madonna an official sex symbol, as well as really directing her to her way of becoming a huge icon. This album has been chosen as a favorite amongst many of her adoring fans across the world. I am one of those fans, who heavily favors this amazing album.

LIKE A PRAYER
The album's first single. What an awesome song. Madonna had, once again, found herself surrounded by the pointing fingers of her critics, due to the song's controversial music video. If you ask me, no matter how controversial the video was and is, this song and video are just way too awesome.

EXPRESS YOURSELF
The album's second single. This song shot straight up to the #2 spot (Billboard Hot 200) and also became a anthem for many women, in being able to stand up to their men. The video version of the song is much different than this here album version. The video version is a completely remixed version.

LOVE SONG (Performed by Madonna & Prince)
I used to hate this song with a passion. But, I really enjoy this song, because I recently became a fan of Prince.

TILL DEATH DO US PART
Love this song. I love it ... love it ... love it.

PROMISE TO TRY
This song is actually about the death of Madonna's mother. The song describes Madonna telling the little girl inside herself that she has to move on, where Madonna, herself, explains that it's difficult to let go, but she promises to try. This is a beautiful and touching ballad.

CHERISH
The album's third single. What a great song. I could listen to this song all day.

DEAR JESSIE
The album's fifth single, though, not released in the U.S. What a great fantasy-esque song.

OH FATHER
The album's fourth single. The song is about how Madonna's father had became after Madonna's mother had passed away, due to breast cancer. In the video, Madonna shows exactly what the song is about, as well as showing what her marriage was like to Sean Penn. Personally, I think this is a beautiful song, and one of Madonna's best.

KEEP IT TOGETHER
The album's sixth & final single. What a great song about remembering who your family is and where you truly came from.

SPANISH EYES
Madonna seems to have a way with recording beautiful Spanish-influenced ballads. What a great song.

ACT OF CONTRITION
This track was sort of shocking, but at the same time, pretty hilarious.

This album is just incredibly outstanding. Madonna really knew what she was doing when she recorded and released this album. This is a great album all Madonna fans must have it.

MADONNA REALLY SHOWS HER STUFF ON THIS ONE!! 5 Star Review
2009-09-05 - If I had to pick any one of Madonna's classic 80's albums that served notice to the world
that she was indeed an artist with substance and depth, and not just an overblown image
with shock appeal who manipulated the media like an evil genius, then 1989's "Like A Prayer"
would be the one that I'd play for them! Everything about it from the packaging,
to the production, to the material, the lyrics, etc., was much more thought out and
carefully crafted than the albums leading up to this...
Not that MADONNA (1982), LIKE A VIRGIN (1984) or TRUE BLUE (1986) weren't already iconic
pieces of pop art which were all well-recieved, but LIKE PRAYER was something else entirely!
From it's very release, it was fodder for controversy!--A Madonna staple! (-:
That now infamous multi-million dollar PEPSI endorsement deal V.S. the "Like A Prayer"
music video with Madge undulating and smooching with a gorgeous black christ-like figure
while a choir sang in the background and crosses burned!--OH MY!! (Tee-Hee!!)
MADONNA was/is a genius at starting a ruckus and manipulating it to her advantage!
But like I said, on this album she also showed that she was indeed AN ARTIST as well.
From "Like A Prayer" to the iconic "Express Yourself" to the emotional "Oh Father"
and "I Promise To Try" to the perky "Cherish"...to all of the others, Madge weaved a spell
on her fans and her 1990 BLONDE AMBITION TOUR set it all in stone for the whole world to recognize!
MADONNA LOUISE CICCONE was a bad mother--(Shut Yo' Mouth!!)--Well, I'm talkin' about MADGE!!--
(Well, we can dig it!) (-:
Even though this was a great album, it ranks as # 2 of my all-time faves
of MADONNA's classic '80's output in which she established herself as a force to be reckoned with!
TRUE BLUE is # 1, LIKE A PRAYER is # 2 and LIKE A VIRGIN is # 3!!---For my money!

So Good 5 Star Review
2009-08-05 - Ah, this album reminds me of high school. It also reminded me of the fact that Madonna and Sean Penn were once married. This album is so good, and it has some juicy little insights into their tumultuous marriage. A must have.
