Editorial Review:
It didn't take the postmotherhood Ray of Light to prove that Madonna is a big softie; this collection of ballads and slow jams had already done that. Somewhat confused in intention--the scalding ache of "Oh Father," a 1989 song for her own dad, is shoved between the sex of "Rain" and a version of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You"--this is nonetheless a highly listenable album for those who dig Madonna for her music as much as for her cultural significance. --Rickey Wright
Something to Remember Reviews:
Emotionally *So* Impacting & Deep!
2008-12-01 - After the shock from Madonna's Sex Book/Sex Video, Justify My Love Video, Erotica Video and Erotica Album it became apparent that the idea of taking a softer more subtle approach might be soothing for the soul and perhaps another reinvention of a more "emotional" Madonna --one that can hold her head up high despite the harsh critics, press, and outraged narrow minded people. This album is a collection of ballads that span from her movies, as well as rare ones not heard on any albums "I Want You" plus the nice ones heard from her past releases.
Always a classic, this will take you to the beginnings of her career with "Crazy For You" from the motion film Vision Quest. For those who loved her concert "Who's That Girl" then the song "Live To Tell" will make you reminisce. From all the songs I find "I Want You" to capture me personally as I am always on that state of mind. Another classic from the movie At Close Range there is "I'll Remember" definitely a nice time when Madonna and Sean Penn were close and very much in love. From A League of Their Own (Special Edition) is "This Used To Be My Playground" very slow, and memorable as sometimes letting go of something so special seems impossible. If you enjoyed the Blond Ambition Tour then "Oh Father" is one to sit back and take pleasure in. Not only for remembering that concert but for that era which was so spectacular.
Favorite songs for me aside "I Want You" is the version at the end with Massive Attack, 'Rain', "Love Don't Live Here Anymore", "You'll See", and "Take A Bow". Ironically, the song "Bad Girl" was not included which is really a shame as that ballad was a very strong one in her Erotica Album. "One More Chance" is a song I definitely feel strong in my heart --as many people in this harsh world do not believe in second chances or forgiving.
This is a classic album that will never become outdated, dull, or forgotten. While she may have had her hard times she proved to the world of critics, fans, and haters that she is capable of becoming even stronger! As the years pass and time passes it's apparent Madonna is a force to be remembered now and forever; an Iconic figure that puts messages out there for the world to see from herself and through her music! It's the depth of the lyrics, the intonations of her voice, and most of all the entire package that create such a gift --something to remember now and forever!
*Note: Other releases have extras. The Argentinean 2008 Import release has the extra track "Veras" in Spanish. The Japan version has the lyrics unlike the others but then no back artwork [instead clear with white artwork on disc].
Great songs, cool collection, not essential.

good ballad collection
2008-01-22 - I'm not a huge fan of Madonna but I do love her ballads. This album - Something To Remember - contains her most popular ballads from the late 80s and early 90s. Definitely worth purchasing.
Great Ballads
2007-10-10 - This is a great collection of Madonna's greatest ballad hits. It also includes some new songs, "I Want You" (and an orchestral remix), "One More Chance", and the defiant "You'll See" to name a few. This is the more easily accessable place to find "This Used To Be My Playground" which was recorded (but not used) for the 'A League Of Their Own' but was later placed on the hard-to-find CD, 'Barcelona Gold'. It's a wonderful well rounded collection. Rumor has it that Madonna will release a volume 2 of ballad hits in the future. When, who knows?
Something to Believe In
2007-10-04 - The Madonna image has often overshadowed the Madonna artist. Even she conceded the point after the controversy surrounding Erotica and (to a lesser extent) Bedtime Stories. So in 1995, this unadorned collection of ballads appeared, with a CD case that had no back sleeve and a spartan cover photo and inlay. This was Madonna begging to be taken on her own terms, musically. No flash, no little girls squeaking and no dance floor manipulation.
It works. The first song that cracked the mold is here, "Crazy for You." It was the first time the same woman who belted out dance kitsch like "Material Girl" and novel hits such as "Like A Virgin" came forth with a set of chops. It's also here with Like a Virgin's Rose Royce remake "Love Don't Live Here Anymore." While they did help Madonna establish that she was more then ditzy pop hits, it is interesting to hear her voice then and compare it to the richness she gained by the time another movie track, "This Used to be My Playground," topped the charts. Casting aside the drama and distraction helped to reshape Madonna as a vocalist to reckon with; 1995 was also the year she was preparing to take on the film Evita.
The result for me is the one Madonna album that has outlasted all her others in my collection. While the range of tracks fluctuates greatly (the sweet and sexy "Rain" sits right next to the bitterly personal "Oh Father"), it is also the least gimmicky collection of her work. That alone makes it a worthy listen, and a CD worth getting out of the rack on occasion.
