Description of True Blue:
A quintessential '80s pop artifact, Madonna's third album was a huge musical leap forward and ranks with Like a Prayer and Ray of Light in the top echelon of her works. Only the title track (a bit too obviously a '60s girl-group homage) and the fine-but-nothing-special "Jimmy Jimmy" slightly lower the quality bar. Most of the songs share a jittery dance-pop sound, edgy, distracted, and nerve-jangling but simultaneously invigorating and exhilarating and almost dangerously giddy--a perfect soundtrack for the mid-'80s. Highlights include the hedonist's credo of "Where's the Party," the subtle and pretty Latin pastiche "La Isla Bonita," and, towering above all, three stunning mega-hits. "Papa Don't Preach," with its gorgeous pseudo-classical strings intro, is a sumptuous airwaves banquet, as Madonna wrestles with the have-the-baby-or-give-it-up dilemma (abortion's not in the picture) in newly gritty tones. "Open Your Heart"'s marriage of jitter-pop and wistful melody underscores the singer's yearning but forceful stance ("You better open your heart to me, buster"). And "Live to Tell" is a riveting ballad, lushly melodic yet spare and haunting--a place, as the song says, where beauty lives. --Ken Barnes
True Blue Reviews:
Madonna ... TRUE BLUE (1986)
2009-09-30 - In 1986, Madonna had released her third album entitled, TRUE BLUE. This album had shown us a new Madonna. The clunk jewelery and black outfits were gone. The rubber bracelets and clunk bracelets were gone. The lion's mane was now cut down to a bleach-blonde pixie style cut. And the outfits were now of a feminine Tom-Boy style. tHIS album is one of the many albums where Madonna has re-invented herself. And this album is another of one of the greatest albums Madonna has ever put out.
PAPA DON'T PREACH
The album's second single. This one of Madonna's greatest songs. In the song (and video), Madonna takes on the part of a teenage girl, who has been dating a boy she really loves. This boy has gotten her ... pregnant. But her boyfriend loves her to the point of moving in with her and helping her raise their child. But, Madonna has a problem ... telling her father, who will "Preach" to her about what she is doing is wrong. This song went on to become Madonna's fourth #1 hit single (Billboard Hot 100). The second #1 (Billboard Hot 100) was "Crazy For You" in 1985, and third #1 (Billboard Hot 100) was "Live To Tell", which I will get to in just a moment.
OPEN YOUR HEART
The album's fourth single. This was actually the first song I have heard from Madonna and it is the song that turned me into the huge fan that I am today. This song's music video is nothing short of a classic, where Madonna takes on the part of an Italin exotic dancer. The little boy in the video tries to get in to see Madonna, but is refused admission, where he stands outside, imagining what Madonna's performance is like. At the end of her performance, Madonna and the kid go running off into the sunset, just having plain old fun.
WHITE HEAT
This is a great song, and is named after the James Cagney movie of the same name. The movie was, I think, a Mob movie from the 1940s, and because this song is very similar to a Mob concept, Madonna named it after the original Cagney movie. Just so you know the excerpts you hear in the beginning and middle of the song, are actually of James Cagney in the film of the same name. On backing vocals is ... Richard Marx, another one of my favorite artists. He had done this the year before his self-titled debut album.
LIVE TO TELL
The album's first single. This song, while being Madonna's third #1 hit (Billboard Hot 100), was also the theme song to the 1986 thriller, "At Close Range", starring Christopher Walkin and Sean Penn (whom Madonna had been married to a year by the time of this album's release). This is one of the most beautiful ballads Madonna has ever recorded. The song is so haunting, yet so moving. Controversy had stirred up in 2006 when Madonna, after kicking off her CONFESSIONS TOUR, performed this song, while hung up on a mirrored cross, wearing a red blouse and the crown of the thorns, symbolizing Jesus' crucifixion. Madonna has stated that she did not do this to poke fun at the Catholic faith, but to point out the hatred in this world.
WHERE'S THE PARTY
Great party song.
TRUE BLUE
The album's third single. A great tune here.
LA ISLA BONITA
The album's first & final single. This is the first of two Madonna ballads to feature a Spanish influential sound. This is another one of Madonna's major hits and has been perfoming an uptempo version of this song on her CONFESSIONS TOUR.
JIMMY JIMMY
A little bubble-gummy, but the song is real catchy.
LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND
"Make Love, Not War We say", and that's exactly what we all should be doing: making love, not making war. A great song.
This album, in which Madonna had dedicated it to, "...My Husband, The Coolest Guy In The Universe...", is another one of the great ones in Madonna's catalogue. Make sure not to skip this one.
My Number One Fave Of Madge's Classic 80's Albums!!
2009-09-04 - It was 1986 and I was 22 yrs old, partying hearty at the clubs as well as
performing in a very popular funk/rock band that was a very hot draw throughout
the deep south (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee). I was already well familiar with the
pop jaugernaut which was/is MADONNA because of her preceeding smashes with her
debut self-titled album and the now iconic "Like A Virgin", which shot her from
stardom to superstardom!--And had girls all over america trying to imitate her
trashy chic look with underwear on the outside, mucho bangles, big shagged
& teased hair, and more crucifixes than are in the vatican! (-:
I always wow people with the story of the first time I ever saw Madge perform,
in the early days (1982) before she was a megastar, at a gay club called
"The College Station" in Jacksonville, FL for a mere & unbelievably small fee!! (-:
It was just her and two dancers (one being her now estranged brother Christopher Ciccone!)
with 4 club tracks ("Holiday", "Everybody", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star") with just
the background vocals on them and she danced and sang the lead vocals live!
She already had the air of a star even back then!--The way she carried herself and
performed passionately for that relatively small crowd of a few hundred very rowdy
and screaming fans, even though nobody really knew who she was at that time!
Fast forward four very eventful years later and Madge was worldwide sensation!
Enter this fantastic album "True Blue" in the summer of 1986, which was packed full
of what would turn out to be pop classics: "Papa Don't Preach", "Open Your Heart",
"Live To Tell", "Where's The Party" and "La Isla Bonita", all of which are still
well loved by her fans and performed in all of her live incarnations since then.
Dedicated to the self-confessed love of her life, former hubby, Sean Penn...
"True Blue", with it's unforgettable cover photo by the late Herb Ritts
and memorable pop hits, paint a perfect picture of what was hot and cutting edge in 1986.
I can't tell you how many times me and my freinds danced our butts off
to "Where's The Party" and "Open Your Heart" mixed and extended to perfection
by whomever was the hot DJ of the time at whatever club we were feeling!
"La Isla Bonita" is just eternal with me!--That song will never play out!
"Live To Tell" was the theme song from a very good movie starring Sean Penn
and Christopher Walken called "At Close Range", which did really well back then.
All of these factors combine to make "True Blue" my number one favorite album
in the classic 80's catalogue of Madonna output which she made her name on!
The first Queen of Pop reigns with this,, true 80s pop at its best
2009-08-08 - I was obsessed with Madonna growing up, and I remember this album when it first came out-I listened to her "Like A Virgin" album relentlessly in the 6th and 7th grade and "True Blue" as a terrific follow up. Another reason this album is so great is Madonna also made some memorable music videos from these songs-the good old days of MTV. Awesome ablum cover first of all, and this CD is full of great, enjoyable bright Madonna music. Most of the songs are terrific and atleast a couple went to Number One on the charts. Madonna collaborated with Patrick Leonard who also co-wrote several of the songs. Easy to listen to and one of the most popular album of the 80s-true competition with so many other great 80s artists like Michael Jackson and Prince.
1-Papa Don't Preach-great song and this is one of Madonna's more famous songs about a young woman who's pregnant and afraid of being judged- 10 out of 10
2-Open Your Heart-Good song though forgettable-8 out of 10
3-White Heat-Great song, Madonna really uses her voice in this. Was never released as a single-9 out of 10
4-Live to Tell-Great, beautiful ballad-like song that is also used in the film "At Close Range" starring her then-husband Sean Penn. This song is still played on all of the light-rock stations and has stood the test of time. 10 out of 10
5-Where's the Party-Fun, fabulous song that really gets you moving. I don't think this was ever released as a single but this is one of the best songs on the album-10 out of 10.
6-True Blue-Good bubble-gum quality to this song-cute and uppity though not my favorite-8 out of 10
7-La Isla Bonita-Different sounding song with some Spanish lyrics but this is another favorite on the album-another one that has stood the test of time-10 out of 10
8.Jimmy Jimmy-Nah, kind of weak, allegedly written about James Dean with elementary lyrics. Not my favorite- 6 out of 10
9.Love Makes the World Go Round-Kind of a "filler" track that again, doesn't really leave its mark and the only weak song on the album-5 out of 10
"True Blue" is one of the best examples of pure Pop that we were lucky to have in the 80's,,,, you will enjoy it!
I owned this cassette tape
2009-08-05 - And after recently hearing 'Holiday' (that song is not on this album) on the radio decided that I needed to purchase all my old Madonna that I owned in either record or cassette tape form in cd form. So glad I did. I forgot how totally awesome this album was. The whole album! If you love Madonna or just love 80's pop you should purcase True Blue.
True Blue - The album that made Madonna into a Pop Icon
2009-03-25 - I was 8 years old when True Blue was released, I liked Madonna on her 1983 release Madonna, loved Madonna on 1984 release Like a Virgin, became a fanatic when True Blue hit, and have stayed a fanatic ever since. The album is Madonnas' biggest selling studio album to date with over 30 million sold to date, now thats a lot of records. It was an era when Madonna was on everyones lips, young, fresh, sexy. True Blue took her into Iconic Status. The album is fun, fun, fun with a touch of sentiment, fun all the way with a string of #1's, Papa Don't Preach (classic), Open your heart (sexy check out the video, its amazing that Madonna has maintained that body till today), Live to tell (my absolute favourite Madonna ballad till this day that ballad stands the test of time) True Blue (sweet, lovely sing-a-long pop song) and of course the incredible Spanish inspired La isla Bonita (another classic that just hits your soul, loooove that song) all # 1 world hits. She scored #1's in UK and US simultaneously incredible. Madonna co-wrote and produced every single song on the album with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray (a wonderful team, that also worked together on her masterpiece "Like A Prayer".
The album is pure Pop/Dance a great listen, never a boring moment I bought this remastered copy last year, amazing, the sound will blow you away. Madonna amazes till this very day, I am like her little brother growing up with her music for 25 years of my 30 years of existence (and I am not even gay). But True Blue is what made me put her in my heart for good.
This is a classic for any Pop lover, if you are a Madonna fan and do not have this album, you are not really a fan (he he)A must have in your collection.
