    Description of Secretary:
This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer

    Secretary Reviews:
    this movie 5 Star Review
2009-09-24 - I really like this movie it gives a glimpse into the mentaility of a rather large subgroup of people. Although i myself as not into this type of play i o have mant fornds that are in the sometimes seedy worldof BDSM. This is a great movie portraing it

    Secretary 4 Star Review
2009-09-08 - I guess we all need love, no matter how weird that turns out to be. This movie explores the need for some people to hurt themselves, even to the point where they will do the will of others no matter how bizarre that might be. Lee is a masochist who needs to be dominated. She's spent time in an institution only to find the man of her dreams in the form of her employer.

Her employer wants to dominate, and fears being dominated. He eventually learns of Lee's needs and seemingly knows how to deal with them. In the end the couple presumably lives happily ever after, though we don't know that for sure.

This film is definitely not for everyone. For those who crave bizarre, they must realize this is still a mainstream movie which must conform to certainparameters. The characters are rather drab, almost trite, but they do eventually seem to grow on the viewer's imagination. Many male viewers may want to have the type of relationship with a women as portrayed in this film. Most people will feel happy for Lee at the end of the movie because she got what she was searching for. She just needed to come out of her shell and ask for it.

What a wonderful love story. 5 Star Review
2009-09-04 - No matter if you are not into BDSM, this story is a truly moving love story. Where two people help each other overcome and accept their real true selves. AWESOME MOVIE!!!!

    Freedom 5 Star Review
2009-08-15 - This is about the freeing power of alternative lifestyle choices and how loving they can be, although on the surface they may appear otherwise. I watched this movie 8/14/09 courtesy of Netflix and it is now my number one favorite movie. For people choosing this lifestyle, there was also a very good segment about "aftercare."

Intriguing movie..........gets & keeps your attention. 5 Star Review
2009-06-20 - James Spader was very good in this movie. The secret life that no one knows of....... Very interesting. Glad I bought it. Gives the Title of "Secretary" a whole new meaning.
