Editorial Review:
Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton stars with Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo in this heartwarming comedy about mothers, daughters and cutting the apron strings. When it comes to her three free-spirited daughters, Daphne (Keaton) is just your normal overprotective, overbearing, over-the-top mother. Worried that her youngest daughter, Millie (Moore), will end up alone, Daphne meddles in her daughter's love life until she ends up doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons...and all in the name of motherly love.
Description of Because I Said So (Widescreen Edition):
In Because I Said So, Diane Keaton outdoes any pushy parent trying to marry off their children. On the eve of her 60th birthday, Daphne (Keaton) decides that she will find a suitable suitor for her youngest daughter Milly (Mandy Moore). Never mind that Moore was barely into her 20's when she shot the film and easily could pass as a high-school senior. The film asks us to believe that an otherwise smart, loving mother would push marriage on a young woman who obviously wasn't ready for that kind of commitment. The romantic comedy has a cute premise that grows old fast: In order to root for Daphne's almost manic desire to see Milly walk down the aisle, the audience has to believe she's undergoing some kind of trauma, or at least dying of an incurable disease. But because she is such an overbearing busybody whose best interests for her daughter have little to do with reality, viewers just see an obnoxious, meddling mother trying to micromanage her child's life. That we don't want to strangle Daphne is a credit to Keaton's acting skills, which manage to shine through, even in the most over-the-top scenes. Lauren Graham and the always adorable Piper Perabo play Milly's older, married sisters. Had the film revolved around the three sisters' lives--sans mom--Because I Said So would have been a much more interesting picture. --Jae-Ha Kim
Because I Said So (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Mildly enteraining...
2008-08-15 - 2.5 stars. I liked the movie a little more than I expected, but the script sort of fell apart. I'm not a big Diane Keaton fan, her voice rides my nerves and for the last couple of decades she's played the same character over and over. I do like movies that touch on the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters. They always make for great drama. This one was just a little too pat and uninspired. Still, it was mildly entertaining.
... and ½ - For the Great Outfits!
2008-08-08 - Ahhh another Mandy Moore movie under my belt! Out of all of her movies, for me this one comes in third (if I had to rank her movies) behind Saved and A Walk to Remember (yea I know, it wasn't that good, but I have to admit, it got me going at the end). Diane Keaton, although a little spazzy in this movie, also adds to the satisfactory movie that it is.
Mandy Moore plays Milly, a 20 something year old caterer with men trouble. Her mother, Daphne (Diane Keaton), an invasive, pushy mother decides that she is going to find the right man for Milly. Through an online dating service, Daphne meets up with the different men who answered the ad, and chooses her idea of the perfect man for Milly. She then secretly sets them up to "bump into one another", making the young man promise not to give away how they came to meet. While another man who was denied by Daphne (for not being stable enough to suit her daughter), begins to pursue Milly himself. Milly continues dating these two men, finding herself in the middle of what she wants, and what her mother wants for her love life.
The story is cute, and the acting is pretty good. Unfortunately, Diane Keaton gets annoying as the film continues, and Tom Everett Scott (who plays Jason - Mom's choice of the perfect boyfriend) is one awful actor all together. So I would give it a 3, as an OK movie for rental when you are bored. BUT, being a girl I will add ½ a star for the great outfits each of the women (Milly, Daphne, and Milly's two sisters) wear throughout the movie. Hey, they gave me some good ideas to spice up my wardrobe!
One Star-Spoilers Follow
2008-07-01 - It could have been a good movie. It had a good cast Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Stephen Collins about a domineering mother and her daughters specifically her youngest daughter Mandy Moore who's saddled with the horrible name...Millie who's basically a pushover it was classifed as a chick flict or a romantic comedy. Yet it was awful. The lenghts that the mother goes to in order find a husband she thinks is perfect for her daughter was horrible. Really on-line dating and screening dates to find the perfect man? That's a really horrible thing to do. Unfortunately, any sympathy you would have for Millie goes out the window as she dates two guys at same time, sleeping with both guys and even getting engaged with one while thinking about moving in with the other. I'm suppose to be rooting for Millie because she's cute and her mother's a pain? I don't think so. If you don't think that's painful enough all of the sexual jokes are. Skip this movie believe I wish I had.
What a Shame
2008-06-24 - I bought the movie because Lauren Graham was in it and I knew what a great comedian and singer she is. Instead I got Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, neither of which gave a very stellar performance.
I hope in the not too distant future Lauren Graham will be STARRING in some good movies.
Uninteresting and repetitive
2008-06-10 - The movie is about an overbearing meddling mother who decided to play a match maker for her youngest daughter.
Diane Keaton, who happens to be a talent actress, horribly overacts here and turns into a cliche. There are the same cake in the face, bad dating prospects, annoying children, seen in many other movies. This is dull and forgettable.
