Description of So Real:
In the market for a single album consolidating most of the selling points of mainstream female teen- and dance-pop of the past few years? Try Mandy Moore's So Real. Various cuts here demonstrate her (and her writing and production teams') mastery of the styles of Britney Spears, the Spice Girls, Janet Jackson, and early Madonna. While projecting a playful sultriness much like that of Spears, the younger Moore takes pains to keep things chaste: not only does she promote "trust" on "What You Want," she rhymes it with "crush," not "lust." Complete with a hook that defies interpretation ("I'm missin' you like candy") on the breakthrough single "Candy," and a can't-miss Janet-style ballad in "Walk Me Home," So Real adds a welcome note of CD-length consistency to the current girl-pop formula. --Rickey Wright
So Real Reviews:
10 Years Later...
2009-06-12 - ...According to Mandy-get your money back. According to me who was 14 when it was released-I have to say that it was good for its time and I
enjoyed it back then. Mandy's very first album was at the time a shocking disappointment as it was thought that the album would launch her to the same fame that Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had-but it did not. I remember hearing 'Candy' on the radio but compared to 'Baby One More time' and Genie in a Bottle" it was not catchy enough or different enough and I'll admit I didn't like it so much. But today this is how I rate them:
1.So Real-The simple rhyme is annoying-but its dancier and catchier than 'Candy', though its very doubtful that releasing this track first would have made a difference. One of her singles. 6/10
2. Candy-The remix of this in her next album is so much better-but even that isn't great. Not a great track then or now but memorable in Moore's career for being her first single. 5/10
3. What You Want-A nice poppy dance track that in retrospect was a perfect example of what we are at that age-immature! 6/10
4. Walk Me Home-A standout among her slow ballads and released as yet another unsuccesful single. Nothing compared to what Moore has done lately but at the time-good. 5/10
5. Lock Me In Your Heart-Another sweet song from Mandy-I liked it better than Walk Me Home. 6/10
6. Telephone (Interlude)-This bit is BEYOND dated!
(Does anyone's phone ring like that-and does anyone have a home phone anymore!)
7. Quit Breaking My Heart-This must have been considered the best on the album because it has a reprise and everything-Mandy has good vocals but
the song is no classic. 5/10
8.Let Me Be The One-This song is so cute-age-appropriate and it seems to me that Mandy's singing to a Backstreet Boy or an 'Nsyncer. I saw her sing this live-she does a great job and sounds just as good. 6/10
9. Not Too Young-and Not Too Good. In retrospect-yes we were! Not a
memorable track-quite forgettable 4/10
10. Love Shot-An upbeat fun dance track-not a classic but cute and good. 5/10
11. I like it-I really did and still do-never were Mandy's young cotton-candy vocals better put to use than in this song-a minor unknown pop gem.
7/10
12.Love You For Always-At 14 you may believe that but its rare when that is the case-good but forgettable track. 5/10
13. The Reprise-5/10
Overall in retrospect-if young teenagers were as innocent as they used to be like say in the 30s, 40s and 50s then this would have been a success
because this album really is a valentine to a teenage girl-it something that now-a-days an 8 year can (hopefully) still appreciate. If not for
the failure of this album Mandy might still sound like this (a la Jessica Simpson).
5/10
Awesome!
2009-04-26 - So this product is greatness. The CD itself and the casing is in prime condition, the CD plays all songs without any sort of interference, the item was shipped and was earlier than i had expected. Its an awesome product and i thankyou for having it on sale!
Beautiful voice
2007-11-05 - Mandy Moore had a beautiful voice even as a teen, and I think the music on here is fun and has a good variety of styles. The only drawback is the way Moore, at times, tries too hard to have a "ghetto" sound, or whatever it is that must be done to create an artificial inflection that sounds more urban or city -- it just doesn't suit someone as classy as Moore.
In the end though, even though I never listen to pop, all of the songs on here are appealing, and I give her a thumbs-up in comparison to Simpson, who has a boring and bland voice, and Spears, who isn't talented at all.
The Second Sweetest Vocalist, that I Happen to Know Of! 3.4 stars.
2007-11-05 - To Be Frank as all Get Out, This is One of the most Fluffiest CDs that I Happen to Own. Mandy's voice, is Literally, like Looking Around in a Candy Store, And Finding Your Favorite Sweets.
She came onto the scene in '99, and was in dead last, When it Came to Popularity. Did she have the best voice? NO. Did she write any of her lyrics on this album?? Sadly, no. Is she the prettiest of them all? No.
Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera (my favorite), Jessica Simpson, and last but not Least, Amanda "Mandy" Moore, Rose to Fame in 1999. Many Believe that this Year, When These 4 Particular Singers, Became Stars Overnight, the Explosion of Pop Began, and the Music Industry would Be Changed Forever and Ever; in a Very, Very Bad Way. Some Believe that these Girls, Ruined what Music was and Should Be About.
Me, Personally, I was Elated, To See New Stars On the Rise!!!! I Couldn't Get Enough of Christina's hits, Genie in a Bottle, What a Girl Wants, and Most Note-able, Come On Over (All I Want is You). The videos for these songs were OK (GiaB), Great (WaGW) and Addictive (COO(AIWiY)).
But back to Mandy; this CD, is Your Standard, Mushy, Pop Affair. Not that that's a Bad Thing, Per Se...Just Don't Expect Anything to Really Blow Your Mind, or To Stick With You Forever and Ever, Minus the Lead Single, Candy, Which is and Was Very Infectious, on it's Debut day. I Don't Recall Hearing it On the Radio, But Every Time I Saw the Video, I Engulfed it, Taking in Mandy's Natural, and Simple Beauty.
Her Second, and Final release, was Walk Me Home. The Video was Very Sweet, and the song Itself, Featured Adorable Vocals From Miss Mandy Moore.
Highlights are:
-Candy- (Initial, and Mildly Successful Single)
-Walk Me Home- (Second Single. I Don't Think It Faired Too Well)
-Quit Breaking My Heart- (The Telephone Interlude that Proceeds This Song, is So Cute. Most Would Skip Over it, But I Played it Over and Over. Basically, it Features Mandy and a Friend, Who Received a Message on Her Answering Machine, that Mandy was Having Guy Troubles, and Wasn't Feeling So Good About Her Current Situation. She Calls to Let Her Know that if She is in Need of Anything, She's There for Support. One of the Highlights on the disc, IMHO (In My Honest Opinion)).
-Quit Breaking My Heart-
-Not Too Young-
-Love You For Always- (Reminiscent of a Selena song, Because it Features the Same Melody)
-Quit Breaking My Heart- (Reprise) (This Sweet Song is All Acoustic, and Mandy coos Her Way Through It.)
Overall, I Can't Recommend this, Unless You're a Huge, and I Mean **HUGE** Fan of Pop Music. It's Not Bad, But It's Kinda Weightless, if You Know What I Mean.
Pros:
Sweet vocals
Catchy melodies
Poppy
Ballads
Cooing
Honesty
Cheap
Innocence
Purity
Mandy
Pretty
Strong
Confident
Interesting
Cons:
Cheesy Lyrics
Trite
Unmemorable
Disposable
Tween-y
3.4 stars.
Drivel
2006-12-04 - By Mandy Moore's own admission, this was a poor album. A few of the singles are catchy, so save your money and buy them instead of the entire album.
