Alfredo Piatti: Siciliana Reviews:
Highly Recommended 5 Star Review
2009-03-25 - Alfredo Piatti is known to cellists as the author of 12 technically-demanding and musically-pleasing caprices, as well as the namesake of an especially fine Stradivari cello. Far less well-known are the numerous other works he composed for his instrument - concerti, sonatas, and short pieces, as well as works for multiple cellos and for cello along with voice. This disc is an important document in the attempt to rectify the neglect that these works, many of which are quite fine, have been subjected to. Through his compositions here, Piatti shows himself to be an eloquent, lyrical, and rather charmingly restrained cellist, beyond the technical prowess he possessed and which won him the admiration of the likes of Liszt, Brahms, and Joachim. Marc Moskovitz evinces qualities in his playing that easily match the demands, both technical and musical, of the compositions. Especially impressive are the Tarantella and the concert-caprice "Piaggi d'aprile." Mr. Moskovitz is joined by colleagues who are equal to the task, and the results, in the two accompanied songs but especially in the two cello duets (performed along with two different cellists) are terrific. This is a disc of interest to cellists and lovers of music that is sincere and refrains from too much sugar in its simple, nineteenth century sentimentality, and is performed with first-rate technical assurance and keen musical insight.

Open a nice Italian red... 4 Star Review
2007-09-05 - ...which is what my wife and I did as we put on this CD and sat down to a simple but delicious meal at home. The sinuous, expressive cello and the lovely piano accompaniment was the perfect recipe for a musical entree that would go down easily with or without a glass of Italy's finest. The music of Alfredo Piatti was new to us and we look forward to hearing more. The liner notes provided interesting background about the cellist, the pianist and the composer. A most satisfying treat.
