Editorial Review:
By the time she made her bow on MTV Unplugged, Mariah Carey was already a multi-platinum-selling artist who owned the charts, but didn't command much respect because no one had ever seen her perform live. As it turned out, Miss Thing could deliver as sure as Domino's, emoting significantly over soulful arrangements of several hits and a cover of the Jackson Five's "I'll Be There." That track became a No. 1 hit and earned a solo recording deal for featured backup singer Trey Lorenz. This may not be Carey's best record, but it's certainly her most surprising. --Daniel Durchholz
MTV Unplugged Reviews:
It did what it was supposed to do...
2008-03-22 - When Mariah Carey decided to do this concert, there was a lot of talk about her simply being a studio creation that was not nearly as talented as she was made to seem. She hadn't really performed live at that point, and with the Milli Vanilli scandal still pretty fresh in many people's minds, having an artist prove themselves was more important than ever before.
Well, she did that. She came out, and sang many of her big hits, and managed to show that she had promise as a live performer. Though I can't say I prefer any of these versions over the studio recordings, each song sounds good in its own way, and you can hear she is having a good time.
This is not exactly an essential recording by any means. If you just want her version of "I'll Be There," you'd be happier with a greatest hits collection. However, if you are a hardcore fan, or are just curious how she sounded live, this is a good album to have.
She finally proved herself!
2008-03-04 - This album is of course Mariah letting the world know her voice was not manufactured and that it was really her voice. While I do think it is a tiny bit overrated it is still essential for any Mariah fan. Her voclas were especially amazing on I'LL BE THERE. VISION OF LOVE and CANT LET GO are others she sang extremely well. Highly recommended!
OK, but definitely overrated.
2007-06-15 - I bought this CD because I wanted to see how these modified arrangements would be since you all said that this CD was God's gift. It isn't. I can't really sit through the whole thing but it definitely isn't a total waste. The worst track here is definitely Emotions. I just wasn't feeling it much.
Make It Happen, I'll Be There and Can't Let Go are the best. But the rest is just OK. And I definitely can't say that any of these songs can stand up to the originals (besides I'll Be There, it IS an original debut) And this verison of Emotions wasn't too good. And like her first CD it's OK, but overrated.
Listen to the samples first, buyers!
Can't Let Go
2007-04-13 - This is probably (in my humble opinion) the best Live show by Mariah carey. As she reaches the end when her band starts "Can't Let Go", it put a sad effect in my heart. I just feel "Oh, NO, don't, please don't go".
Now THIS is Mariah
2006-11-15 - This album is short like a photo of a galaxy is short... it doesn't take up a lot of space but it encompasses vastness almost beyond measure. This is the Mariah Carey who more than deserves her fame, a musician with a powerful and beautiful voice and sense of timing. Don't let the short list of titles put you off, this is a Mariah Carey album that should be in your collection, close at hand, if you like her at all.
