Editorial Review:
Hmm. The sixth charitable & Friends endeavor by superstar tenor Luciano Pavarotti is one of the strangest, though it will undoubtedly delight the singer's legion of fans who hold him sacrosanct. Here, he duets with Mariah Carey, Joe Cocker, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, Boyzone, B.B. King, and others in some of the most unexpected mixes of Europop, classic rock, and opera ever seen onstage--all for the sake of the children of Guatemala and Kosovo. The oddest moment belongs to B.B. King's trademark (and telling) "The Thrill Is Gone," where Luciano, obviously at a loss for words, simply hums a duet with Lucille. On Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," Pavarotti sings an entirely different tune in Italian. Is this what our Nemorino (Pavarotti's glorious role in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore) has come to? Is this the shape of classical to come? Is your money better spent by sending it directly to the War Child charity or perhaps by hearing one of Pavarotti's classic recordings? You decide. --Edward Garabedian
Pavarotti & Friends For Guatemala And Kosovo Reviews:
Still an Excellent Choice for 2009!
2009-06-16 - I recently purchased this CD, although it's been out for 10 years. It is an excellent compilation of musical genres that can appeal to a wide range of fans. My favorites: "Mi Tierra" (G. Estefan), "Magic of Love" (L. Richie), "Hey Man" (Zucchero, BB King) and the audio "show-stopper" version of "We Are the World." The entire CD is full of musical surprises ... still a wonderful gift in 2009 for yourself, or those who love great music!
the best
2003-09-11 - great album and for a great cause
Beautiful Music
2002-02-20 - This is one of the most beautiful CD's I have ever heard. The combination of Pavarotti, Mirah Carey, BB King, Lionel Richie and the children's choir is magnificent!!! Listening to those children singing in Italian was very beautiful.
I am a big fan of Pavarotti and have been for years. I have given this CD to many friends as a gift and they have all enjoyed and loved it. The Italian songs brought back memories of growing up in NY and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
Terrific
2001-10-25 - As always, Pavarotti and 'his friends' have made another great album. This time he is joined by such diverse acts as Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, B.B.King, Joe Cocker, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, and Boyzone, among others. These benefit concerts are a great way to raise money for children in war torn countries, as a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this album goes to 'War Child'. The 28 page book is packed with photos from the night, and of some of the children who will benefit from this. Recommended.
Pavarotti, Ricky et al
2000-04-14 - After accidently seeing the PBS show I rushed to find the CD and soon after found the video at Amazon. What an entertaining show and as all others have said, Ricky Martin shined and sang Mamma in Italian perfectly. Pavarotti blended in so beautifully with every guest and you should especially listen to Boyzone who are from Ireland but in my ears top the Back Street Boys and all other American boy groups. The only singer who really needs some developing was Laura Pausini of Italy. All in all, I highly reommend this CD and I will enjoy it for years to come.
