Editorial Review:
There's no question that Marilyn Manson's 1995 album Antichrist Superstar was a great-sounding record. It brooded, ripped, and clattered in all the right places, mixing industrial beats and samples with roaring heavy-metal riffs, echoing Goth keys, and the occasional tuneful pop vocal. But for all the sonic appeal, some of the songwriting wasn't too strong. No such problem on Manson's new record, Mechanical Animals, which forsakes some of the band's former grind in favor of dynamic glam rhythms and good old-fashioned melody. When the band tones down, as on the largely acoustic "Speed of Pain" and "Fundamentally Loathsome," Manson even sounds like a candidate for an Unplugged session. Most often, however, as on "Rock Is Dead," "User Friendly," and "The Dope Show," Mechanical Animals is a brash, decadent, and glittery display of self-indulgent hooks and melodramatic vocals that sounds like Aladdin Sane-era David Bowie and T. Rex at their most boisterous crossed with the more modern sounds of today's industrial nation. --Jon Wiederhorn
Mechanical Animals Reviews:
still manson's best...
2009-02-26 - I just listened to this album the other day and think that it is still one of the best albums that Manson produced. It's original, rhythmic, and still rocks.
It Could Have Been Better!!!
2009-01-15 - This is my 4th Marilyn Manson CD, and he's still going downhill for me! Whatever happened to the hard rock that Lest We Forget and Eat Me, Drink Me had? I don't really have a favorite on this CD, yet. I'm sure I'll like this one day. If you love goth and Marilyn Manson, you'll love MECHANICAL ANIMALS!!!
love it!!
2008-12-03 - awesome to be able to buy your favorite old cds for around $3 : )
Uh, yeah...
2002-08-02 - This album kinda had me worried when I borrowed it off a friend to have a listen before i bought it. There was a strange mix of bowie-style sounds, hard rock, and some old-fashioned depressing tunes. I gotta say, i didn't like what i heard. However, being a Manson fan, i still bought the album anyway. Now, a almost a year on, it remains one of my favourite albums of all time.
If you're new to Marilyn Manson, a tatster of his music, this album IS NOT for you. get Antichrist Superstar, or, even better, Holywood [*****]. But, if you like Bowie, if you're a Manson fan, or if you're a fan of strange music, get it now.
What the hell?
2001-09-02 - This is Manson's worst CD to date. From 1992-1998 he was my god, but this CD was so bad I ended up destroying it. Manson's new CD, Holywood is awesome. Whatever you do don't buy Mechanical Animals it's just bad with one good song, I Don't Like Drugs.
