Editorial Review:
The Bounty is on a mission in the South Seas. The brutal and arrogant Captain Bligh becomes antagonized by the genteel manner of the First Officer Christian Fletcher. While in Tahiti, the men of The Bounty are seduced by the gentle beauty of the island and its women. As they head back to England, life aboard the ship becomes unbearable. Fletcher seizes the ship and Captain blight is set adrift. The Bounty returns to Tahiti to retrieve the women, and once reunited, they set sail for a new life.
Description of Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) [HD DVD]:
Moral equivocation was a common trait among several of Marlon Brando's characters in the early part of his career, and so it makes good theoretical sense that he would play the role of Fletcher Christian, the tormented first mate aboard the British naval vessel Bounty. But in fact the part is an ill fit for the actor, whose British accent is poor and who never looked quite right in period costume, anyway. Director Lewis Milestone (All Quiet On the Western Front) makes a good-looking and at times (especially during scenes of shipboard cruelties and conflict) compelling movie out of the material, but overall the film just isn't there. --Tom Keogh
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) [HD DVD] Reviews:
Excellent version
2009-12-26 - As many times as I have watched this movie, it never fails to entertain. Trevor Howard is perfect as Blight, and never has Fletcher Christian, been better portrayed, as by Brando. Really beautiful cine-photography. I should mention that the "shorts" enclosed with this movie, are very informative and interesting also!
Mutiny on the Bounty
2009-07-19 - The movie was top-notch. A great story, and beautifully filmed on location in Tahiti. Definitely one of Marlon Brando's best films. Picture and sound quality are excellent. There is a second disc of interesting "extras". If you prefer real story, real acting, and real photography over today's computerized techno-garbage, then I highly recommend this movie.
Mutiny on the Bounty (2 Disc SE)
2009-07-17 - I've been looking for this product for months. Should have known to come here first. Product was shipped promptly and in good shape.
Agree With Others Here; It's A Fine Film
2009-03-27 -
I wonder if they made more three-hour-plus films in the 1960s than any other decade? It seems that way. Here is another one. This also is a re-make from a 1935 version of the famous story
I liked this 'Mutiny On The Bounty' better than the national critics did, who got annoyed at Marlon Brando's British accent. I found nothing wrong with it. In fact, Brando gave a solid performance. I'm glad to see fellow Amazon reviewers agreeing with me; it's an underrated film. (Note: I actually have a "deluxe widescreen" VHS of this film, which isn't even listed here.)
Trevor Howard was convincing as the sadistic "Captain Bligh" and Tarita was fair as the love interest "Maimiti." The cinematography might have been the best feature of the film, a definite movie for widescreen as a lot of these mid '50s-to-mid '60s films were. There are some beautiful shots in here, beginning with those Tahiti sunsets. The color in this movie is magnificent.
The adventure, acting and photography were all top-notch and the three hours went by fairly fast.
Mutiny on the Bounty
2009-03-12 - This earlier version of the epic tale of the sea is not as well done as the later version with Mel Gibson. Mr. Brando in my humble opinion did not play Fletcher Christian very convincing for a mutineer. The jacket states he is a 'dandy' transformed into a man of action--I am not convinced. He looked too much a dandy through the whole thing.
Trevor Howard as William Bligh was not played affectivly as I think the book relates, but it did receive high praises from the Academy Awards nominating process, but like giving the Nobel Peace Prize to peace impersonators and politicans without credentials, the awards are somewhat suspicious whether they actually mean anything.
Great work on the sailing of the ship though for when it was produced. Not comparible to 'Master and Commander' and the genius of Mel Gibson or Russell Crowe.
