Editorial Review:
A relatively new, nonwriting artist is at the mercy of outside material, selected not just by the performer but by the producer and record label, each with not-always-overlapping priorities. It's long odds that a truly satisfying, no-weak-cuts album can come of this song-selection-by-committee approach , but Martina McBride pulled it off on her second album, 1993's The Way That I Am. McBride's vocal versatility is a big plus; she sings the four ballads here exceptionally well, with "That Wasn't Me" and "She Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" especially affecting. Better yet are the uptempo songs, to which she adds just the right pinch of polite raunch. The breakthrough hit "My Baby Loves Me" is structured too close to "I Fought the Law" for comfort, but kicks satisfyingly; "Life #9" is delightfully spunky; "Heart Trouble" is well-executed modern rockabilly; and the Pam Tillis/Bill Lloyd collaboration "Goin' to Work" effectively extols the virtues of a job as a salve for heartache. The album's key track is the powerful "Independence Day," Gretchen Peters' groundbreaking table turner about a battered wife who burns house and hubby to ashes one symbolic July 4. McBride's impassioned performance is a fitting cap to a first-rate collection. --Ken Barnes

The Way That I Am Reviews:
The Album That Started It All For Martina... 5 Star Review
2009-10-17 - Still one of my favorite Martina albums. This is classic Martina!
Although this isn't her first album(it's her second) she only started producing hits since this second album, after releasing her famous domestic abuse hit Independence Day, which after 16 years is still her signature song and what a powerful song it is too!!Also other stand outs are the touching ballads That Wasn't Me,her hit Where I Used To Have A Heart(love this song),She Ain't Seen Nothing Yet and Strangers(her vocals are amazing on this). However, there's also some cracking uptempo toe - tapping gems like her hits Life #9,Heart Trouble and My Baby Loves Me.
You can never go wrong with a Martina McBride album. You will not be disappointed with this little gem!!

Pre-crossover Martina, one of her better efforts 4 Star Review
2009-01-03 - Martina McBride's second album, "The Way That I Am,' is a well balanced collection of predominantly country songs that includes a few up-tempo rockers as well as some ballads. It has much more of a classic country sound than some of her later releases. I'm surprised by the relatively low number of reviews on this CD--which I hope doesn't mean that a lot less people are familiar with it. "Independence Day" clearly was the breakthrough single from this disc, but all of the songs are good. "The Way That I Am" is a Martina McBride CD that definitely is worth checking out, especially if you only are familiar with her later releases, which do not have as much of a classic country sound as this one.

The Best Little Singer from Kansas 5 Star Review
2008-07-07 - Martina has a way of making her songs feel like part of your life! We love her. Hope she is a part of country music for a long time!

Love Martina's Voice 5 Star Review
2007-12-03 - I have no musical training and little musical knowledge. I just know
I like to listen to Martina McBride. I was listening to a radio show
and the host was playing Martina singing "God Bless America." I wrote
and asked him to always let Martina sing that particular song. Now he
only plays the Martina version.

I find her music restful, and there's a sincerity and down home feeling
about it, and her voice is lovely. Tonight I was listening to her "White
Christmas" CD.
