  • Editorial Review:
Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

Great Classic Movie! 5 Star Review
2009-09-15 - This movie will go down in history as a classic!!! Great story, great actors, great everything!!!!

One of the BEST films ever made in the history of filmmaking!! 5 Star Review
2009-09-10 - This movie is a jewel, a gem, a rare treasure in filmmaking. Why did it not get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and more importantly, why didn't it get nominated and win!? The cast is top-notch, terrific! The music is outstanding. The direction is inspiring. The story is beautiful, sad, moving and memorable. I haven't seen a movie touch on so many different subjects in 2 hours. It deals with love, death, abuse, racism, marriage, neglect, unhappiness and most of all, friendship. You will laugh, you will cry, you will sympathize, you will get angry and you will walk away from the film with a better understanding of life and what really counts. Fried Green Tomatoes should have received much more credit and awards than it did. As you can see by the overwhelming number of 5-star ratings, the movie delivers in more ways than one. It is filmmaking at its finest. Everyone should have this in their collection. Next to the 1960 Disney film Pollyanna with Hayley Mills, it is my all-time favorite!

OK..I have now forgotten how many times I have watched this movie! 5 Star Review
2009-09-08 - I just finished watching FGT for the "UPTINTH" time..and on SO many levels of life and living that life ..it is so powerful.....first the story is truly amazing by itself but I was told that there was a real sexual relationship in the book between Igbie and Ruth that was ignored in the movie ..hello Hollywood!...anyway...the details of the movie , to me, are amazing...for example, when Ruth dies and Cicely Tyson's character goes through the house covering up portraits and stopping the arm on the "big ben" clock:I love that history of events that we do not do today....the racial parts of this movie, the homelessness and how they were treated, the depression, who feed them....and then these strong women....it's all encompassing ...you must see this movie as you would see any great movie
