Editorial Review:
Good girl Mary (Jena Malone) and her best friend Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore) are at the top of the food chain at American Eagle Christian High School. But all that is about to change in this "subversively funny" (USA Today) teen comedy about hype, hypocrisy and high school. Also starring Macaulay Culkin and Patrick Fugit, Saved! is "a boldly hilarious satire" (Rolling Stone)!
Description of Saved!:
Classic teen comedy mixes with cunning satire in Saved!. Fervent Christian Mary (Jena Malone, Donnie Darko) believes God wants her to save her gay boyfriend by sleeping with him. But he gets sent to an anti-gay indoctrination camp while she ends up pregnant--which starts to drive a wedge between Mary and her snotty best friend Hilary Faye (Mandy Moore, How to Deal). Meanwhile, they're both interested in the son (Patrick Fugit, Almost Famous) of their Christian school principal (Martin Donovan, Trust). Saved! respects faith but gleefully mocks the excesses and absurdities of contemporary organized religion, particularly its suburban, let's-speak-the-language-of-the-kids manifestations. The actors, including Macaulay Culkin (yes, from Home Alone) and Mary Louise Parker (Fried Green Tomatoes), play their parts with sincerity, which makes the fusion of humor and heart succeed. A delightful movie. --Bret Fetzer
Saved! Reviews:
Well Said
2009-08-20 - This is a good little movie about what it really means to be Christian. I enjoy it because it sends out the message that we are not all perfect, but God loves us just the way we are. It also shows how people can easily misunderstand God's word.
One item missed
2009-07-10 - One item missed by the reviewers concerns why my hackles always rise when the topic are the so-called "Christian" academies. These schools were established in the 50s and 60s to avoid school integration. Notice how few minority faces are in the student body and the faculty.
I was very please with the sellers service
2009-06-26 - I was very pleassed with the low prices offered for the purchase of this film.
just my opinion!!!
2009-01-18 - hi first of all I think this movie is brilliant, well directed and written. Very well acted and the characters are great and very likeable. I know they'res some religious stuff in it but in my opinion it's just a movie, made for entertainment. I really don't see what problem people had with the ending. The ending was perfect!!!
2.5 stars out of 4
2008-12-20 - The Bottom Line:
Saved takes an interesting path for a teen movie and features some clever dialogue, which may be enough to recommend it despite a weak ending and a lead performance by Jena Malone that could charitably be called "uninspired."
