Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, a.k.a. the "Apple guy") who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses.

Live Free or Die Hard uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humor, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. There was some controversy over the film's PG-13 rating--there might be less blood than usual, and McClane's famous tag line is somewhat obscured--but there's still has plenty of action and a high body count. 2009-12-18 - I love this movie, however days after I purchased it, Amazon dropped the price by $8. I asked for a credit for the difference. They refused and insisted I must ship the original one back to them so that they could credit my account and then bill me the new price and ship it back to me. The logic behind that policy escapes me. At least the movie doesnt appear used like most of their products are.

Big Die Hard fan will surely love this..
2009-12-14 - I have seen this movie on the big screen but opted to buy this Bluray to experience it on my living room. It is a very good movie. I hope there is still more to come of this type.

For Die Hard fans who REALLY miss the series only!
2009-11-29 - I had high hopes for this sequel based on the good reviews on Amazon. This movie disappoints. It starts out a bit slowly & the filming is that new dark, cold effect that seems to be the new way of trying to create suspense or what, I really don't know. The movie doesn't really pick up in true Die Hard fashion until later in the movie. And it's hard to take the villain vs. Mclaine seriously. The villain is a behind the scenes white collar "I don't want to break a nail" kind of guy. Yes, Bruce Willis still makes a great Mclaine and he's still tough as nails, but some of the action scenes were just too over the top to be remotely believable even to the most "die hard" Die Hard fans. ***Spoiler Alert***

I watched the unrated version. I don't know how it differs from the theater version. The following were just too much and terribly done (because the just don't work): Mclaine is driving the police car in the tunnel (the traffic jam/crash happened to leave a clear path for him to drive through) and the helicopter is shooting the hood from above, outside. The car is a half mile inside, how do you shoot straight down & shoot the car????? Then the helicopter crashes & explodes & one of the terrorists survives (not likely) completely fine. No soot smudges from the wreckage, no injuries. As clean as when he walked out of his dressing trailer that morning. The tractor trailer fighter plane scene was terrible. The truck was smashed in the front in one scene then the next it wasn't. Keep your editing in order boys. And a fighter jet is shooting missiles at close range & can't hit the truck?? And it can maneuver under the bridge?? Then when the truck is finally hit, it's still drivable???

This movie just doesn't live up to the others, but if you have a cold beer & want to just veg out & enjoy Bruce Willis kicking a**, rent it.


Perfect modern American hero
2009-11-25 - I liked everyone in the movie except Justin Long. It's something about his eyes that makes it look like he really is just reciting lines. Also, they should have threatened McLane's family much earlier. The truck and fighter jet sequence was terrible. Great movie overall and fine addition to the series.

Stunts Galore and Willis Still in Character
2009-11-22 - Nothing much to add to the trunk-full of reviews except that the stunts alone are worth the price of admission. Add to that a script that gives Willis the wherewithal to keep the character vital and you have a picture worth seeing. Of course, it is not the type of violence that seems real which makes it entertaining not frightening.
