Description of Waist Deep (Full Screen):
Waist Deep may not be believable from start to finish, but it's a slickly produced and reasonably entertaining entry in the "gangsta noir" genre that includes such previous films as Dead Presidents, Set it Off, and Never Die Alone. In his first leading role since playing a somewhat similar character in 2001's Baby Boy, Tyrese Gibson plays O2 (short for "Oxygen"), who's just emerged from six years in prison and is looking to go legit all the way. That's when his car gets stolen – with his young son Junior still in the backseat – and O2 retaliates by inciting a gang war on the streets of Los Angeles. He recruits his unpredictable pot-head brother Lucky (Larenz Tate) and the reluctant assistance of a hot hustler named Coco (Meagan Good) in a bank-robbing scheme to pay the $100,000 ransom that a brutal machete-wielding thug named Meat (played by rapper The Game) has demanded for Junior's safe return. Director Vondie Curtis-Hall (whose son, H. Hunter Hall, plays Junior) keeps the twisting plot moving at a pulse-quickening pace, and the movie looks great thanks to Shane Hurlbut's widescreen cinematography, but the build-up of improbable (or just plain ludicrous) events becomes a little too much to handle as Waist Deep gets waist deep in its own predictability. On the plus side, Gibson and Good make an appealing action couple, and despite its overly maudlin conclusion, the movie's got some emotional depth that comes as a pleasant surprise amidst its otherwise forgivable shortcomings. --Jeff Shannon
Waist Deep (Full Screen) Reviews:
Good Movie
2008-05-13 - I thought it was a decent movie. It won't win an oscar or anything but it was pretty entertaining, and of course the girl is nice.
the ending was beautiful...
2007-10-16 - stop labeling this as the 'BLACK' movie the 'BLACK' gangsta movie the 'BLACK' bonnie n clyde. That's what's wrong with america,we have "BLACK" movies.i just think it's stupid.Anyway i thought this movie was superb, great acting, and since when are movies suppossed to be believable?? if you haven't seen this movie i suggest you buy it,or atleast rent it.
you'll get a laugh or two out of it
2007-06-12 - There is a lot of action in this film as well as gratuitous violence. But there are too many absudities to take this film all that seriously. The film also sends a bad message to youngsters attracted to the gangsta life. The message it sends is that if you are a smart gangsta, you can get away with just about anything and live happily ever after. You'll have money, women and anything else you desire.
The main character in this film played by Tyrese Gibson, isn't an active gang banger but was recently released from prison and trying to turn his life around. The ironic thing about this is that in the process of turning his life around, he must utilize is skills as a gangsta.
An easy to follow drama that will keep you interested
2007-06-11 - Waist Deep is the story of an ex-con who is trying to reform himself and make a better life for his son when circumstances force him to return to a life of crime. Tyrese Gibson stars as O2, a man who just got out of prison and is working at rebuilding his life. He's got a job as a security guard and takes care of his son. After picking his son up from school, O2 is distracted by a beautiful woman crossing the street. The next thing he knows he's being carjacked and the robbers are speeding away--unaware that his son is in the back seat. After enlisting the help of the woman who distracted him (Meagan Good in the role of "hooker with a heart of gold"), O2 learns that his son is being held captive by a ruthless gang leader who wants $100,000 in exchange for the boy.
Waist Deep was action packed and easy to follow. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I like the idea of a man who wants nothing more than to reform and show his son that a life of crime isn't his only option. The fact that this man is then forced to choose between leading by example and having someone to lead only makes the storyline more intriguing. I didn't know what to expect from this film, but I was entertained from start to finish. It won't win any awards, but it will definitely keep you interested.
Horrible, start to finish
2007-06-11 - The plot on this movie is straight out of a ghetto high school play, unreal from start to finish. The plot has been used over and over in "B" rated movies, actor gets in trouble, cant go to cops, actor must solve problem himself. Why did I waste money on this movie???? It's funny that even "amazon's" review calls this movie "unreal" from start to finish. Now I enjoy the occasional "ghetto" movie (boyz n the hood, menace 2 society...) but they had realistic plots/stories, this one however starts with B.S., An ex-felon/convict gets a job as a security guard with a gun...and that pretty much describes how the rest of the movie is, Horrible/unrealistic.
