Description of The World Needs a Hero:
The lineup is different. The record company is new. But vitriol-tongued Dave Mustaine remains Megadeth's constant. While more commercial and mature than such unbridled early releases as So Far, So Good . . . So What!, this follow-up to the poorly received Risk finds Megadeth mostly back to their metallic roots. Mustaine continues to alternately mine politics and self-reflection to good effect, and his solos still shred. The taut, hooky "Moto Psycho" is polished, millennial thrash, and though the rest of the material on this 12-song collection isn't as instantly memorable, it's certainly ambitious. Mustaine's biting vocal and the muscular musicianship of the powerful title track and the pained love-lost ode "1,000 Times Goodbye" hit the mark, as does the epic, string-laden ballad "Promises," though Mustaine's patented vocal seems out of place, as does the classical guitar on "Recipe for Hate . . . Warhorse." That said, old-school fans will worship the likes of "Moto Psycho" and the classic and brutal "Dread and the Fugitive Mind" and "Return to Hangar." --Katherine Turman
The World Needs a Hero Reviews:
The World Needs a Hero
2009-12-01 - The World Needs a Hero being Megdeath's 9th studio album and their 2001 release is a mix of heavy metal and thrash metal. The lyrics are ok but nothing special. Some of the lyrics on this release seem a bit pressed like the political light lyrics on the track "The World Needs A Hero". This release has a 3/5 grade all over it. Ok guitar riffs, run of the mill melodies and standard metal lyrics. All the lyrics are included in the booklet and a list of whom plays what but not what what brand of the instrument played which was included on prior Megadeath releases. Allmusic and Blender also gave this release a medium grade (3/5) and I agree with them. 3/5.
"WHEN" = "AM I EVIL?"
2009-05-03 - THE SONG "WHEN" IS A COPY OF "AM I EVIL?", YES THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE LYRICS AND MUSIC, BUT IS THE SAME STRUCTURE. SOMEONE HAS PAID ATTENTION TO THIS???
63/100, Megadeth is back...but where's the classic thrash we've been waiting for?
2009-03-11 - Dave has reunited the gang for another go around here to try and redeem themselves from Risk. While it's a slight improvement and small step in the right direction it still remains pretty disappointing and not worth listening to. The guitar work is basic except for the solos scattered throughout the songs and the bass is even worse. The drumming is just plain bad and the lyrics are overall some of Dave's worst.
"Disconnect"-Good riff and promising song until the drumming comes in, then the song gets pretty bad pretty quickly, it's even worse when you realize that the whole song is this one riff. Just plain terrible drumming, and...is that a tambourine I hear? 4.5/10
"The World Needs A Hero"-Super simple bass and drumming that belongs in a stadium style rock song. There's some lame woman voice overs scattered through it as well. 5/10
"Moto Psycho"-One of the heavier songs on the album. Some of the vocals come across as corny and the lyrics are pretty bad. 6.5/10
"1000 Times Goodbye"-Best drumming and bass work on the whole album with some solid riffing and good singing on Dave's part. The extraordinarily lame voice overs and somewhat childish lyrics really keep this song from being great. 7.5/10
"Burning Bridges"-Pretty boring and sounds a lot like a song that could have been on Risk. 5/10
"Promises"-Not bad, could have done without some of the special effects and could have used more time in the studio getting some polish. Feels like potential unreached. 6/10
"Recipe For Hate...Warhorse"-A surprising song considering the rest of the crap that's on here. A little boring, but Dave sounds good and angry and the lyrics are easily the best on the whole album. 7/10
"Losing My Senses"-I guess the album has begun to pick up here and is no longer crappy and is now simply, "almost passable". Granted this song is lackluster, but it's still better than a lot of the other stuff on here. 6/10
"Dread And The Fugitive Mind"-Almost seems like a sequel to "Sweating Bullets" at first. Pretty catchy and one of the better songs on here. 7.5/10
"Silent Scorn"-A solid guitar intro. Not exactly sure why they added in the trumpet, it works I guess but I think I would prefer the song without it. Really just an interlude of sorts between "Dread And The Fugitive Mind" and "Return To Hangar". As a result I won't bother rating it or including it in the average.
"Return To Hangar"-Definitely the best song on here, even if it has to rely on its superior predecessor "Hangar 18" in order to achieve that status. 7.5/10
"When"-A very angry sounding song both lyrically and musically. It starts out slow and moody and slowly heats up but never quite gets as aggressive as I would have liked. Lyrically it's both a bit mopey and childish, but it does have some meaning behind it and I do feel for Dave. 7/10
My favorite tracks are basically the only ones that are above mediocrity, "1000 Times Goodbye", "Dread And The Fugitive Mind", and "Return To Hangar". It feels more like Megadeth than Risk did, but even now it just sounds like Megadeth Lite. If you're a Megadeth fan you've no doubt already listened through this, if you haven't yet then don't bother.
My first Megadeth expirience
2009-02-01 - This was the first Megadeth album I ever bought. Granted it isn't their most consistent album I still like everything on here. It has some of their catchiest riffs and very impressive guitar solos. Not bad at all.
A Solid, Underrated Album
2008-10-09 - Okay, first thing's first...Don't go into this album with outrageous expectations. This is not Megadeth at their mightiest, but it is still a good collection of songs from a solid lineup.
Even with the black cloud of two past members (Friedman and Menza) hanging over their heads, Pitrelli and DeGrasso are still able to step up and deliver. Pitrelli in particular compliments Mustaine quite nicely, even though he doesn't have that exotic sound Friedman employed so often.
There are a few slightly boring tracks (Losing My Senses, When, Moto Psycho) but there are also some really good tracks that more than make up for it (1000 Times Goodbye, Burning Bridges, Recipe For Hate, Dread and the Fugitive Mind).
So, is The World Needs A Hero as good as Rust In Peace or Peace Sells? No, but its far from bad. Check it out after you get the classics.
