The lineup is different. The record company is new. But vitriol-tongued Dave Mustaine remains Megadeth's constant. While more commercial and mature than unbridled early releases such as So Far, So Good . . . So What!, this follow-up to the poorly received Risk finds Megadeth mostly back to their metallic roots. Mustaine continues to alternately mine politics and self-reflection to good effect, and his solos still shred. The taut, hooky "Moto Psycho" is polished, millennial thrash, and though the rest of the material on this 12-song collection isn't as instantly memorable, it's certainly ambitious. Mustaine's biting vocal and the muscular musicianship of the powerful title track and the pained love-lost ode "1,000 Times Goodbye" hit the mark, as does the epic, string-laden ballad "Promises," though Mustaine's patented vocal seems out of place, as does the classical guitar on "Recipe for Hate . . . Warhorse." That said, old-school fans will worship the likes of "Moto Psycho" and the classic and brutal "Dread and the Fugitive Mind" and "Return to Hangar." --Katherine Turman

Amongst the best of Mega Albums 
2008-08-06 - I am a huge Deth fan and a couple records and a few songs I have felt so, so about. Not this one. None of the songs, even the ballad, which style I tend cringe on, drops the ball. This record has to be right up a there the raw stripped down hard rock only Megadeth can lay down. Rust In Peace has to my fav with two loose cannons as the firing squad, Mustaine and Freidman. Compared to much of the great accomplishments of Deth records, this is as consistent as Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction. The consistent hammer-you-to-the-floor rock that this album provides leaves any Megafan as no brainer to "get the goods" that this record has to offer. In otherwords, it kicks you in the sack.
Return to Megadeth
2001-05-25 - Megadeth has brought back the true rythm to music in this collection of artistic talent. I never thought anything could be better than Cryptic Writings, but the many different songs on this album are amazing. Dave's vocals and licks backed by Al and his licks is amazing. What melodies. Disconnect offers a fantastic way of perfoming a solo byusing awesome guitar sounds before it kicks in. Motophsyco is the return of songs like She Wolf, or Symphony, in my own opinion. Promises is a superb ballad that puts every other artists songs into the back seat. Even if you don't like Megadeth, you will like this song. Recipe for hate is performed sort of like the way Holy Wars, how the song rolls into the next. Silent Scorn is a rythmic melody in which Dave performs a solo backed by a trumpet or horn. The title track has awesome guitar affects too. Megadeth returns to spead metal, not much of the beginning stuff, but more like Rust In Peace and Countdown. This is by far, the greatest Megadeth album today on the shelves. I pity anyone who doesn't pick it up.
Megadeth Strikes Back
2001-05-15 - 5 years ago I started hearing Megadeth... It was at home on my ghettoblaster... The album was Countdown To Extension, and damn! It was good! Now I have been a collecter of Megadeth since that time, and now they are out with a new album. The world needs a hero is a true masterpiece! The World Needs A Hero have some common traits with albums like Countdown to Extension, Rust In Peace and a little of cryptic writings. Peace Sells but whoes buying has also a little influence on the album. The album; World needs A Hero is a true comeback from the masters of Speedmetal. With a new record company, manager and two new bandmembers, Megadeth is back to stay. The style of their music is fresh and newborn in a way that should be heard, and Dave Mustaine has been creative when it comes to lyrics. A great album for new and old fans of the beloved Megadeth. It's nice, as a old fan of Megadeth, to see the band with fresh energy.It's almost like they started all over again! So buy The World Needs A Hero, if you want to enjoy the pleasures of true SpeedMetal... It's a true masterpiece!
