Editorial Review:
"United Abominations" is an album that throws back to the sound and energy of classic albums. With songs like "Washington Is Next!" and "Amerikhastan" it is a commentary on today's tumultuous world and the United Nations.
Description of United Abominations:
Nearly 25 years after its formation, Megadeth is making its most brilliant work, a feat that some acts find unthinkable––maybe impossible––after half that time. When Mustaine sings about politics it's never in the abstract, faraway sense; his lyrics are riddled with references to the here and now––the boundaries and bombs that make the threat of war––or the threat of doom–– real. So it's no real surprise that this release features lyrics liberally peppered with references to Afghanistan, 9/11, NATO and the like.
Of course, no one buys a record or a ticket to a show specifically to hear five-minute polemics and that's where Mustaine's real talent––a talent for creating ear-perking riffs and solid, carefully constructed songs––comes in. The album may require that you read the newspaper on a regular basis but it also allows you to let loose with abandon and excitement. "Never Alone... a Call to Arms," "Gears of War" and "Play for Blood" are remarkable because they recall the classic metal of Judas Priest, Diamond Head, and the like and prove that there's nothing quite like an overdriven boogie-based riff to excite the most primitive impulses in the listener. Mustaine makes a bid for commercial radio by revisiting Youthanasia's "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)" with Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia. It's his most emotionally honest vocal performance to date and one that will no doubt finally earn him wider critical recognition. ––Jedd Beaudoin
United Abominations Reviews:
megadeth continue
2009-09-28 - megadeth continue their return to form started with THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED. the 2nd trilogy is worth owning,THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED, UNITED ABOMINATIONS and ENDGAME.
Possibly the best Megadeth album since RIP.......amazing, should be a charttopper
2009-06-29 - This has probably been the best Megadeth album in nearly 20 years. Amazing. Let me tell you, if it wasn't for RIP or Peace Sells making fans happy, this would probably be Megadeth's greatest album.
Surprisingly Good.
2009-04-25 - I was an old school Megadeth fan that left the fray sometime during the Cryptic Writings era. Hadn't listened to Megadeth since because my musical taste changed. But for some reason I decided to give United Abominations a listen and WOW, I was pleasantly surprised. The album has overtones, both musically and thematically similar to Rust in Peace (my favorite 'Deth album). The main difference is on R.I.P, Mustaine appears to be writing the lyrics for you to just listen and digest, but on UA it is almost as if Dave is talking directly to you, whether you agree with him or not.
Normally I don't like that approach, but I think it really works. I've only had the album for two days and I have been listening to it non-stop. I have to say it....Megadeth is definitely BACK. Excellent album both musically and thematically.
Polical and about US!
2009-02-14 - This is a very good albumn. Megadeth is back! Dave is great with his vocal's especialy track 8. I like the political tone in these times, they have not backed off of what we as a country are doing! Megadeth is my all time favorite band! This albumn is a must have.....
73/100, Megadeth's best album since Countdown To Extinction.
2009-01-21 - The System Has Failed was a good start and gave us a couple of good songs to keep the fans almost satisfied for a while. Lucky for us, it seems like Megadeth has finally begun to hit its stride again and have given us something many previously thought was impossible after Risk, a good album.
"Sleepwalker"-Love this song, I listen to it constantly. It should make old-school fans happy with it's heavy thrash riffing. The lyrics are just for fun and often bring a little smirk or smile to my face. Great opener. 9/10
"Washington Is Next!"-Another great thrasher with some surprisingly good lyrics. I can't get enough of this song. 9/10
"Never Walk Alone...A Call To Arms"-A very solid riff in an overall very catchy song. The lyrics are kind of bad though. 7.5/10
"United Abominations"-A song with a message that it's going to force you to hear one way or another. It's a very melodic song, but it still has a few very short moments where you think it might turn into a thrash song. while the lyrics for the most part have some important meaning to them there are some that are just kind of stupid. 7/10
"Gears of War"-Love the intro, then it just gets super simple and monotonous. Having said that I really like Dave's vocals throughout the song and if you ignore the stupid chorus line then the lyrics are some of his best. 7/10
"Blessed Are The Dead"-I really like the guitar line and the lyrics int his song. 7.5/10
"Play For Blood"-Not a fan of this song really. Both the lyrics and music are disappointing. 6/10
"A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)"-This is a remake of the masterpiece "A Tout Le Monde" off of Youthanasia. I'm not exactly sure why they put this on here, it probably would have worked better as a bonus track for people who pre-ordered it or something. To tell you the truth I like the original better, mostly because I really don't like the guest vocalist that was tacked on here. Anyway since it's not a new song or even a cover for that matter I'm not rating it or counting it in the average.
"Amerikhastan"-The lyrics are pretty bad throughout the song as is the vocal delivery. Musically it's pretty much just an excuse for Dave and Glen to do some solos. 6/10
"You're Dead"-Another song that I consider kind of mediocre. It is still pretty listenable though. 6.5
"Burnt Ice"-A song with some important lyrics that some people need to really pay attention to. It's a pretty melodic song reminiscent of Countdown or Youthanasia but has some pretty technical guitar parts with some great solos. 7.5/10
Overall my top three tracks on here would be "Sleepwalker", Washington Is Next!", and "Burnt Ice". It looks like Megadeth finally delivered and gave its fans a solid album. It's not up to par with their first four albums but its almost like Risk never happened. If you're a Megadeth fan who gave up hope, now might be a good time to give them another try.
