Wes Craven's Shocker Reviews:
Green Andy Reviews: various artists - Shocker, The Music
2009-10-04 - Shocker was a 1989 Wes Craven film about a serial killer who gets transformed into an energy being that can possess other people's bodies and has a son who was adopted by the police detective who's hunting him and...actually, don't worry about the plot. It was a pretty crappy movie, I'm afraid. Apparently it was hoped to be the start of a new horror franchise like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, but it didn't work out, probably because it was so terrible. The soundtracks were going to be all heavy metal, but since the franchise didn't happen, we only have this one volume by which to remember it.
Unfortunately, Shocker, The Music hasn't stood the test of time very well. While there are one or two enjoyable cuts here, the bulk of the record is filler, and heavy metal filler from 1989 doesn't come across well in 2009. The best song is undoubtedly Megadeth's cover of the Alice Cooper tune "No More Mr. Nice Guy", the theme song of the film. Recorded as a three-piece band (since Dave Mustaine had recently alienated his latest guitarist), it's an effective, stripped-down thrash reworking of the glam classic. Probably next in line is Iggy Pop's "Love Transfusion". An oddly poppy number from the man, it's held up by a strong chorus and memorable keyboard line, and is about as good as INSTINCT, his album from the same period. Then there's the Dudes of Wrath: a supergroup led by guitarist Guy Mann-Dude and featuring Paul Stanley, Desmond Child, Vivian Campbell, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Lee, they churn out a title song that's so generic that they could have gotten the same result out of an unsigned pop metal band off the street for $20, and used the money saved to buy a better script for the film. The band does earn their salary midway through the album though, when the song is retooled into a rap-rocker titled "Shockdance", with Alice Cooper on the mic.
After that it doesn't get any better, but it does get a lot less amusing. Bonfire and Voodoo X turn in completely faceless hard rock numbers ("Sword and Stone" and "The Awakening"), Saraya channels her inner Bonnie Tyler for "Timeless Love", Dangerous Toys sound more like Guns n' Roses than ever on "Demon Bell", and Dead On are probably the best of the worst with their competent but unremarkable thrash number "Different Breed". So in the end you've got one enjoyable cover tune, one decent original, some songs that are so bad they're hilarious, and a lot more songs that aren't quite bad enough to be hilarious. Buy it cheap, if at all.
A Real soundtrack that Rocks! Shocker is a 1989 classic!
2005-03-01 - This is one soundtrack that packs a punch.Unlike today's music, this soundtrack really rocks! Proving once again that the 80's had the best music. This is a great metal/hair/rock album.
1.Shocker(10/10)The title track kicks major ass.Paul Stanly(of kiss)on vocals, Vivian Campbell(of Dio and Whitesnake)on guitar, Rudy Sarzo(of M.A.R.S. and Whitesnake)on Bass, and Tommy Lee(Motley Crue)on drums. This song will blow you away.
2.Love Transfusion(10/10)Another great metal song.Iggy Pop on vocals, Guy Mann Dude and John McCurry on guitars among many others involved.
3.No More Mr Nice Guy(1/10)Megadeath sucks on this one.Megadeath ruined this song.Horrible job.Their a good band on their own, but they're suckin all over the place on this one.Shame on you Megadeath!
4.Sword and Stone(9/10)great song performed by Bonfire.Excellent job. This one was written by Bruce Kulick(of Kiss).
5.Timeless Love(9/10)A great love ballad. If you want a ballad dine right 80's style this is a good one!Performed by Saraya. They do a fine job.Their first self titled release is worth buying. This song is just a sample of what the can do.
6.Shockdance(4/10)Pretty bad song, but it is so bad it's actually funny to listen to because of the rap(Pinker he's a stinker)Ha Ha Ha!Alice Cooper does the vocal work!
7.Demon Bell(10/10)This is the best song Dangerous Toys ever performed.A killer tune.Love the Guitar riffs!
8.The Awakening(6/10)Not a bad song.Pretty decent metal tune performed by Voodoo X.
9.Different Breed(3/10)Pretty horrible song by this loser band called Dead On.More like Dead End which is what they came to!
10.Shocker(reprise)7/10)Continuation of te chorus line at the end of the first song.
Super soundtrack!
2004-10-18 - One of the greatest 80's metal soundtracks ever! The main theme "shocker" is absolutely rockin'!!! Also the old song "no more mr. nice guy" sang by Megadeth is much better than the original version... Too bad they haven't brought this album out again... It's a must for every metal fan!
For a soundtrack not bad
2003-12-12 - I got this when it first came out. The highlight for me on this
is the song, The Awakening by a band called Voodoo X. Very, Very Cool Tune. Another stand out is Sword and Stone by Bonfire, Demon Bell by Dangerous Toys. The title track has some various artist on it. Definately a good cd if you like the 80's metal scene, as i do. But definately check out The Awakening by Voodoo X.
