Youthanasia Reviews:
Youthanasia
2009-12-01 - Youthanasia being Megadeath's 6th studio album and their 1994 release is not the thrash metal one is used to but more of a heavy metal and hard rock album with softer guitar riffs then one is used to hear from this band. Whilst this not being bad it just sounds a little less forcefull then one is used to hear from this group. The booklet contains all the lyrics but not a list of whom plays what. Allmusic and Blender gave the album 3/5 and I agree with them and give the same. 3/5.
Misunderstood, Under-appreciated
2008-05-22 - This album is as underrated, as it is misunderstood. Every album that Megadeth has ever done has been different from the other. They always keep it heavy, but are wholly willing to try anything new, so long as it is quality.
I appreciate far more the thrash/speed metal Megadeth we all love, then, say, the "Risk" or "World Needs a Hero" MD, that takes getting used to or just isn't any good. Having said that, this album is high quality, as far as written material goes. True, don't expect "Rust" or "CTE" level decibles, but there is material to treasure here, I don't see how that can be in question.
Most songs on here, while more metal than thrash, are extremely well written. I personally love the majority of the songs on this album.
Check it out.
tyring to hard is like sabotge, sucks bad
2007-11-07 - comercialize, sterilize, megadeths demize, dave tried for number 1 on the charts and crashes his wave to the top for good.
Solid metal; doesn't match previous masterpieces
2007-06-06 - Youthanasi is an album of very consistent metal. Again produced by Mustaine and Max Norman it trundles alonb at a mixture of speeds and once more addresses a range of issues. Such intelligent and trend ignoring music not only shows the bands muse not waning but also contines the bands quality period as this album is assuredly better than anything pre Rust.. However it is also most assurdly not in the same masterclass as Rust and Countdown.
My personal favourite tunes here would include lead cut Reckoning Day and Train of Consequences for having plenty of the fire musically that we've come to expect plus the intellectual aspect as well. Elysian Fields and The Killing Road both show the band at their most melodic, riding riffs that complement the rhythm section. Other tunes that pass the test (IMHO) would be Addicted to Chaos and Blood of Heroes, the former a particularly brooding slow burner of a metal number but perhaps not to everyones tastes.
More middling metal in terms of quality is A Tout Le Monde which for all the fanfare at the time doesn't really work. Nor does the title track. Both are salveable for Megadeth diehards as something a touch different in particular the former. And the great playing on this CD (with restraint added to the formula) and the fact the booklet contains full lyrics to the shebang is also nice.
Fairly rubbish tunes are on this album alas, these basically being the final three tracks. Album closer Victory is at least in posession of an idea which is to make extensive use of previous Megadeth song titles to form much of the lyrics. Also to be noted is it's defiant yet uplifting tone which doesn't happen that often on Megadeth albums.
This is a good album of sturdy metal not without flaws. The production and interesting players not to mention the bands history all work towards making this a four star album despite some dodgy tracks. Megadeth fans probably already own this - newcomers should pick up Rust in Pieces and Countdown to Extinction first and then move onwards to this.
By the way early editions sometimes had a bonus disc of 6 live tunes - great extra value if you can track it down.

2007-04-24 - Megadeth-Youthanasia ***
To cut straight to the chase this is not the best Megadeth album. Not by a long shot. I heard nothing but good things about this album so bought it and was so let down that it isnt even funny. Mustain and Friedmen are once again as always excellent. The two of them had they stayed friends and been able to stand each other would be rivaling James and Kirk by now.
'Reckonin Day' is a great song. The best way to start of the album really. A nice way to get the ball a rollin. 'Train Of Cosequences' is the best song on the album, and it is really just down hill after this. The song is actually one of the best songs Mustain ever wrote. The guitar is great and the lyrics are signature Mustain. Some of the songs like 'Addicted To Chaos' 'A Tout Le Monde' and 'The Killing Road' are all excellent songs. The latter containts an excellent guitar solo. The title track 'Youthanasia' is a diamond in the ruff really because it is surrounded by awful songs. 'Elysian Fields' is just flat out bad. 'Family Tree' is boring and offers nothing and every time I try to listen to this album all the way through I skip this song. 'Blood Of Heros' has its moments where it is a great song and then others it is just annoying, and Mustains voice is strained on it, it seems. 'Victory' is not victory for the band, the song just flat out sucks, sorry die-hards but lets face facts it sucks. The other songs werent even worth mentioning.
This is one of the worst Megadeth albums by far. It only offers a hand full of good songs, and even those are sub-par to say the least. There is only really one excellent song anyways. Youthanasia is out of all the Megadeth albums I own, the worst. It is not worth owning, buy the best of for 'Train Of Consequences' because it is the only song really worth owning.
