Editorial Review:
This extended Behind the Music details the tumultuous life and career of hard rock pioneer Dave Mustaine and his band, Megadeth. Kicked out of Metallica, the band he co-founded, in 1982, the guitarist/vocalist got his revenge by forming Megadeth. His mission statement for his new group: "...to be the fastest, utmost furious heavy metal band ever." But if anybody embodied the philosophy "live hard, play hard" it was Mustaine, who battled heroin addiction for nearly 10 years. Five lineups, 16 trips to rehab, one near-death experience, and more than 20 million albums later, Megadeth have more than made their mark in metal. Also included: "too hot for MTV/VH1" version of the video for "Moto Psycho."
Megadeth - VH-1 Behind the Music Extended Reviews:
Warts 'n' All
2009-08-06 - As part of the rolling VH1 Behind the Music series a `Dave hour' - as James Hetfield calls it in the extra material - is fully justified. Regardless of the fact that Mustaines public persona has not always been overly warm and fuzzy the fact that he is so much a part of the metal music scene of the last quarter of a century means that a solid expose of his life in the music thus far is totally warranted.
The show starts with a run through of early years travails which do to a certain extent explain some of the places Mustaine is coming from. From there we get a bunch of talking heads of varying degrees of validity and in trugh most of them do add something to the brew. We get members past and present, Lars Ulrich and Heftield and the usual cast of managers etc.
What is uplifting to see, but at times difficult to watch, is the honesty of James, Lars and Dave in discussing aspects of the early years and especially the honesty of Dave in discussing his descent into drug hell as well as being strong enough to admit he wasn't strong enough to beat the drugs until well over a dozen attempts. I'm not going to spoil it for you by describing any of the elements in detail in this review, but I will point out that even if you aren't a fan of Megadeth then picking up this release may be a bit of an eye opener - a window into the world and past of one of the men of metal who actually gives good interview.
Megadeth fans really should buy this, others interested in thrash and metal should probably try to get it cheap and add it to their DVD collection too and while the extended version doesn't really seem much different to the standard version which I've never seen, it's a no brainer which to choose if you can get either for much the same price.
Maegadeth - Behind The Music VH-1
2009-01-24 - Amazing DVD! In depth interviews with the Band, great concert footage! A must have for ANY Megadeth fan! You gotta see it for yourself to judge.

Megadeth is the most underrated band in metal history! This DVD proves it!
2007-12-27 - Look, I gave this DVD 5 stars because I thought that it was a very interesting look at Megadeth. This DVD talks about how Megadeth was formed and what went on with each lineup. Here's the problem, though: THIS DVD FOCUSES WAY TOO MUCH ON MEGADETH'S DRUG PROBLEMS RATHER THAN THE GROUNDBREAKING MUSIC THAT THEY'VE MADE! We don't care about Megadeth's drug problems! We care about THE MUSIC!!! I was expecting Megadeth to be honored for making some of the best music in the metal genre, not talked about as a band that went through many lineup changes and had extremely bad drug problems. Megadeth has made some of metal's all-time classics like "Wake Up Dead", "Peace Sells", "Good Morning/Black Friday", "In My Darkest Hour", "Holy Wars/The Punishment Due", "Hangar 18", "Tornado of Souls", and "Symphony of Destruction" and they STILL haven't been honored! What does Megadeth get instead? They get labled as being a band that went through constant lineup changes and had tremendous drug problems! It makes me sick! This DVD is excellent but it doesn't honor Megadeth ONE BIT! Watching this DVD just makes me wonder, when will Megadeth EVER get the recognition they deserve? After watching this DVD, I've come to the conclusion that Megadeth are, without a doubt, the most underrated band in metal history. Hands down...
