Editorial Review:
A MAN AND WOMAN MEET AND TRY TO HAVE A ROMANTIC AFFAIR, DESPITE THEIR PERSONAL PROBLEMS AND THE INTERFERENCE OF THEIR DISAPPROVING FRIENDS.
Description of About Last Night...:
For better or worse, David Mamet's hit play Sexual Perversity in Chicago is watered down into this romantic comedy about a couple (played by Rob Lowe and Demi Moore) who get together and then fall apart due to Lowe's character's inability to commit. Jim Belushi is on hand as the gratuitously swinish best friend who looks at women as meat, and Elizabeth Perkins is entertainingly arch as Moore's gal pal and Belushi's nemesis. There's nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (cocreator of TV's thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn't make it bad or dull. While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion. Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore's understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle. --Tom Keogh

About Last Night
2009-11-01 - I purchased this to demonstrate certain concepts to my clients. I am a family counselor. The concepts were demonstrated in a light hearted manner but clearly got the idea across. It served my purpose well. The movie is also highly entertaining. However, I did not expect the profanity and sex scenes. Do not have children in the room when you view this movie! It also embarrased me slightly with my clients who had previouslyn viewed me as primarily conservative.
a good movie...
2009-08-17 - This is basically a movie about the adult single scene in the mid to late 80's. It's based in Chicago and is about a couple that gets together after a "one night stand" struggling with love and life. Throw in their friends that are not trying to help in the least (his is the typical @#$hole and her's the typical b@#$%). All four actors play their parts well and this remains one of my favorite movies from the 80's.
I've watched this movie several times and even bought the soundtrack. I recommend it for a good watch. This is back when Demi Moore was absolutely beautiful in my opinion
Blu-ray Version: Relationships Look Even Clearer Now!
2009-08-17 - One of my favorite 80s movies still works well 20 years later. "About Last Night" (1986) is a tale of two handsome young singles in the 1980's, enjoying the pleasures of promiscuity and one-night-stands before the serious onslaught of AIDS changed everything. Loosely based on the 1974 David Mamet play "Sexual Perversity in Chicago," the story is about Debbie (Demi Moore), a young graphic designer, and Dan (Rob Lowe), a restaurant supply salesman. They meet at a bar, have a one-night stand, and unexpectedly fall in love. The glow of the initial connection and great sex begins to wear off as their best friends Joan (Elizabeth Perkins) and Bernie (James Belushi) sabotage the relationship. Not content being single themselves without a partner in crime, Joan & Bernie continue to needle their friends and point out the flaws and foibles that being in love bring. Poor communication between Debbie & Dan also plays a part in their relationship beginning to crumble, and as predicted by Bernie & Joan, they break up. Dan almost immediately realizes his mistake in letting Debbie go, but she has already had enough of being with someone who doesn't appreciate her. What happens next? You'll have to watch to find out.
The casting in this movie is perfection; Lowe & Moore have excellent chemistry together, and their relationship is both fun and painful to watch, as they go through the twists and turns that most relationships encounter. As the abrasive best friends, Perkins is stunning in her film debut & Belushi is perfect as the obnoxious politically incorrect neanderthal with a heart. Perkins' character is very similar to the character of Miranda from Sex and the City - The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset). Man-hating on the surface, she deeply wants to fall in love with a man who will return her feelings. However, her bitterness at being burned in the past is her armour, and does not make her very attractive to the opposite sex. Look for Megan Mullalley (better known as Karen Walker from "Will & Grace: The Complete Series") in a bit part as Deb & Joan's friend Pat, a slutty friend who eventually puts the moves on Dan. Just like "Sex and the City" where NYC is an actual character, Chicago plays a large part in this film. Shot mainly on location, it is a time capsule showing many of the sights and sounds of the beloved midwest city.
SPECS:
On Blu-ray this film looks and sounds better than it has in previous video incarnations. A good clear picture (1080p High Def/1.85:1) with the right amount of grain and a fun bouncy 80's soundtrack (including Sheena Easton and Bob Seger) that sounds amazing in Dolby True HD 5.1. Subtitles in English, English SDH, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Audio also available in Spanish 5.1 (Dolby Digital).
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Not too many, but what's there is very enjoyable.
*Edward Zwick (Director) and Rob Lowe in Conversation (42:03)--A fairly lengthy but truly interesting dialogue (in HD) between the two, reminiscing about the making of this film. Zwick discusses how the film is about a premature relationship that has to mature during the pre-AIDS period, which was a time of celebrating sexual promiscuity. He also talks about early casting calls and screen test; considered for Demi Moore's role were Diane Lane and Mariel Hemingway. Rob Lowe was on board from the start, but David Caruso gave a strong read for the role that went to Jim Belushi. Elizabeth Perkins, never in a film before, nailed her audition and was cast immediately. Zwick and Lowe joke how "About Last Night" is the perfect date movie for both males and females; it gives the hope that you can get laid tonight and then fall in love. Zwick calls "Date Movie" the code word for sex; and that "Chick Movie" is code for crying in a movie. Interestingly enough, at the time of filming, Demi Moore was in a serious relationship with Rob Lowe's then best-friend, Emilio Estevez. This didn't seem to effect the very explicit sex scenes or the chemistry between Lowe & Moore. Amazingly enough, this film was shot in 41 days.
*1986 Vintage Featurette (5:45): Light and breezy fluff, with Moore and Lowe discussing the film's theme of a one-night stand that turns into a love affair and how it becomes difficult when the two have flawed communication.
*Previews: "The DaVinci Code Extended Cut," "A River Runs Through It," "Ghostbusters," "Casino Royale," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition"
Travel back in time and enjoy a very insightful and still timely film about relationships.
Awesome....
2009-08-11 - This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I remember taking a girl to see this as a SNEAK PREVIEW when it first came out. The regular movie showing with this was FERRIS BUELLER. This is the best Jim Belushi movie I have ever seen...
