  • Editorial Review:
An outstanding drama, Gallipoli resonates with sadness long after you have seen it. Set during World War I, this brutally honest antiwar movie was cowritten by director Peter Weir. Mark Lee and a sinfully handsome Mel Gibson are young, idealistic best friends who put aside their hopes and dreams when they join the war effort. This character study follows them as they enlist and are sent to Gallipoli to fight the Turks. The first half of the film is devoted to their lives and their strong friendship. The second half details the doomed war efforts of the Aussies, who are no match for the powerful and aggressive Turkish army. Because the script pulls us into their lives and forces us to care for these young men, we are devastated by their fate. --Rochelle O'Gorman

    Gallipoli [Region 2] Reviews:
In the trenches. 4 Star Review
2009-11-10 - A touching drama about the futility of war and the power of male friendship. "Gallipoli" stars a young Mel Gibson as a champion runner and reluctant soldier in the World War I battle of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The story of his friendship with another runner (Mark Lee) and the idealistic dreams both men have of glory and adventure in the war develops into a ghastly look at the horror of a suicide mission and the waste that Australians experienced, as hundreds of their young men were slaughtered. Gibson was just another working actor at this point, not yet the megastar he is today, and he blends in with the fine ensemble cast and delivers a poignant performance, while Mark Lee steals the show as the naive boy who dreams of adventure and winds up in the horrific experience of trench warfare. A strong, emotionally wrenching war film, highly recommended.

crappy film making at its best 1 Star Review
2009-10-13 - made in 1985 this film wants to make you believe it is a war movie. Hardly. the battle scenes are less that 10 percent of this film. But what do you expect from a Rupert Murdoch production? Truly poor film making. Mel Gibson not withstanding (he does a decent job) but I can't say much for the rest of this film.

My review of Gallipoli 5 Star Review
2009-06-07 - I thought it was brilliant when it first appeared. Now, almost 30 yrs later, it is still a brilliant film - not dated at all. The extras on this DVD are terrific. The cast and production staff are interviewed and look back on the making of the film.

    Gallipoli 5 Star Review
2009-04-17 - This movie is a great War film (it only shows like 1/10th of the movie at war). The story is about Archie hamilton, a runner, who looks to be as fast as his idol, the one person who is actually not fictitious (LeSalles). He wants to join the war, but he is underage. He meets another runner, Frank Dunn, and he helps get them into the war.

Later on, Frank does not enter the war, for he cannot ride. He meets his friends (Brownie, Billy, and Snow) who are later also joined in the war, by entering in another place. Frank and Archie meet later when they practice fighting.

Long story short, the war is nothing like they expected. Snow and Brownie die. Frank is to give information to a General Gardner, trying to stop the men from just enetring into their deaths. He does not get there in time. Another man is killed.

This movie shows friendships more than the actual fighting. Frank, one of the men still alive, is forced to live with the feeling that he helped Archie and Snow die. He helped Archie enter by sneaking in a different town.

A very odd, very weird, very strong War film. I personally haven't watched that many War films, but I think "Gallipoli" is one of the best ever.

    Terrible Movie 1 Star Review
2009-02-22 - There is NO story, hardly at all. I kept waiting for it to 'go' somewhere.
No plot really. The ending is awful. They all die, of course which is expected for a war movie, but then it just like ends and you are sitting there going, 'that's the end?'?
You still expect it to have a story you know? there isn't one. It is also historically inaccurate on many counts.
Well it has Mel Gibson in it, what do you expect? 1. he's handsome 2. the movie is gory, and 3. the ending will suck after a mostly plotless story line.
Full of cursing, smoking, carousing, nudity and trash, and then they all die in 10 mins, and the film ends, with literally no ending.
