  • Editorial Review:
All the music, adventure, and colorful fun of Disney's POCAHONTAS come to life like never before in the 10th Anniversary Edition 2-Disc Set. Bursting with all the "Colors Of The Wind," POCAHONTAS tells the story of a free-spirited girl who wonders what adventures await "Just Around The Riverbend." Pocahontas -- along with her playful pals Meeko and Flit -- relies on the guidance of her loving and wise Grandmother Willow when English settlers arrive on the shores of their village. Her chance meeting with the courageous Captain John Smith leads to a beautiful friendship that bridges the gap between two cultures, and changes history. Now fully restored, POCAHONTAS includes the song "If I Never Knew You," and never-before-seen animation seamlessly integrated into the original film. This 2-Disc 10th Anniversary Edition is loaded with spectacular bonus features, all-new games, and soaring Academy Award(R)-winning music (1995 Best Original Musical Score, Best Original Song, "Colors Of The Wind"). Disney's POCAHONTAS is a fun-filled adventure your whole family will enjoy.

Description of Pocahontas (10th Anniversary Edition):
Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. Great songs 5 Star Review
2009-12-02 - I can't tell you how many times i have taught the songs of Mulan to my voice students! These songs are great and totally catch your ear. The story is a classic tale and the animation is beautiful.

    Pocahontas DVD 4 Star Review
2009-10-28 - This was my first DVD purchase from Amazon.com. It arrived on-time and shipped with proper protection for the DVD. I greatly enjoyed the film with the vibrant colors of the scenes and wonderful musical scores. I would highly recommend this film!

Will the real Pocahontas please stand up? 4 Star Review
2009-09-24 - My mother used to say I was descended from the real Pocahontas's tribe, but I never saw any evidence to that effect. Nevertheless, it interested me in looking up her story. The real story is that she was a hostage of the white settlers, assigned to Capt. Smith when she was a teenager captured from her father's house. Since this was a well-known Indian custom (and ancient practice among humans), there was little surprise or action proceeding from this kidnapping, and she was a hostage to peace between the Powhatans and the Europeans. It is unknown what Smith's and Pocahontas's feelings were about each other. Smith took her, still a teenager, to England dressed in English clothing of the time (and most of the true portrayals of Pocahontas are in English clothing). Smith did marry her, and Pocahontas bore him a child. She died of (I think) tuberculosis before she and her family could sail back to the US, at the age of 19, having been displayed at the English court as a reformed savage.

political correct nonsense 1 Star Review
2009-07-23 - This is a children's movie that no child should see. It is full of political correct inane, unthinking nonsense and the characters are depicted in a crass and coarse manner. No child should be subject to this foolish portrayal of the evil white man and the noble indian. I suggest that parents read accounts of King Phillip's War which raged across New England during the colonial period. Certainly there is enough criticism to go around to both groups and children should be taught a few complex truths.

    Pochantas 5 Star Review
2009-05-30 - Thenk you. I facilitate a book club with members from our Local MRDD facility. We read Pochantas as a recent selection. I was looking for the movie to use as our culminating activity. This arrived in a timely manner and was just what I was looking for. Vera
