This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams

Metallica - At The Top Of Their Game
2009-12-03 - Although the band had much success with their previous 3 albums, "Justice" would be the on that put them on the radio and MTV with the unlikely hit "One". The song was a 7 minute plus tour de force based on the novel "Johnny Got His Gun". An unlikely hit for sure, but a song that was all over MTV and rock radio in 1988. Along with the previous album "Master Of Puppets", this would be the band's most progressive metal oriented recording. All of the songs clock in above the 5 minute mark with lengthy instrumental passages and epic lyrics and song structure. "Justice" also marked the first recording after the tragic death of original bassist Cliff Burton. The rage and sorrow at his loss is evident throughout this album. On the downside new bassist Jason Newstead is constantly buried in the mix on this one to the point where his contributions are almost non-existent. The drum sound on this album is also rather "light" even though Lars performance is fantastic. I think this album could really use a good remastering and it would come across much better. The material on this one is all top notch Metallica. For me there is not a weak track in the bunch and shows the band at the absolute top of their game. If this is not Metallica's best album it surly resides in the top 3 of their career. Yea it's sometimes overblown and pretentious, but to a progressive rock fan like me this is all icing on the cake.

My first Metallica Album
2009-10-22 - This was my first Metallica album way back in the mid 90s when I first got into music. It is still probably my favorite. Yeah, there is no bass but who cares? This is probably the best and tightest collection of songs Metallica ever put on a single album. It doesn't have my favorite song by the group on it (Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters) but it does contain classics. My favorite songs from ...And Justice For All are the title track, One and the (almost) instrumental To Live Is To Die.

If you're new to Metallica this is a great place to start.

2009-09-15 - Another one of my Metallica Favorites. "One' is on here, Blackened, Harvester Of Sorrow, I have to Disagree that some think this was when they "sold out" . I have to say they sold out after the Black Album. One Is by Far the Best on this Album. There's an Instrumental by Cliff Burton on here. Remember growing up 11-12/13 years old back in 93-95 in Middle school have the cassette of this. Im now 27. It still rocks and Reminds me of A TRUE METALLICA.

Quintessential Classical Thrash
2009-09-10 - Along with Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" and Megadeth's "Peace Sells...", "...And Justice For All" was an important part of my introduction to metal in the late Eighties. While not a concept album per se, musically this record has such a balance of composition and movement to go with it's themes and lyrical content, a refined version of what we call Thrash. Many scorn the production values. I am actually in favor of the dryness of it, even the minimised or highly controlled bass mix. There is something monochromatic and symphonic about it that lends to the record's power. Metallica's finest moment, in my opinion.
