Death Magnetic Reviews:
.... And Justice for All 2
2009-12-21 - For all those old school die hard Metallica fans you will be happy to hear that the old Metallica is back. I have been a fan since I was teenager. Gone are the over produced songs of Bob Rock. Instead they hired Rick Rubin to produce this album. He was able get the best out of the band without "dumbing it down" to make it more commercial. Those 5 to 9 minute songs are back. Also they have given Kirk Hamet the green light to do what he does best, lay down some mean solos. This record has a similar feel and sound as ...And Justice For All. The one improvement is James vocals. He has always been able scream with the best of them. On certain parts of songs he will sing with a clean voice providing dynamics in the song. Over the years his clean singing voice has vastly improved.
Good to have the old school Metallica back.
ALL HAIL METALLICA

2009-12-02 - I'm a long-time Metallica fan. You can't beat the triumvirate of Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and And Justice for All. And unlike some fans, I think the Black Album was an incredible piece of creative work which helped push the progressive metal genre. And Load and Reload, while having a lot of forgettable garbage (including most of the "popular" songs), also had a few gems. But Metallica is over the hill and going downhill. The music just isn't that tight anymore. It doesn't all sync up and sound cohesive. It's not a matter of getting back to their '80s sound, it's a matter of having a good ear for music again. And the vocals are increasingly strained. It's not just the new songs, but even doing their old stuff, James just doesn't have it anymore. He's too monotone in an annoying resonance. There's no longer the crispness and vocal range he had a few decades younger, even in purely thrash titles where you wouldn't think it would matter that much. Listen to a recent live performance of Enter Sandman (a selection they often do live) versus the recorded version or an old live version and the difference in vocals is stark. I really wish it weren't so, but people do get old and they do lose their edge. Metallica is now like Michael Jordan playing for the Wizards. It's time to hang up the guitars. You should have gone out while on top. Now it's just getting sad. Why not sponsor and support an up-and-coming group and pass the baton? I can't recommend wasting your money on their most recent albums.
Death Magnetic
2009-11-29 - Death Magnetic being Metallica's 2008 release and their 9th studio album is an album that sounds alot like their earlier recordings, i.e., ....And Justice for All. The tracks range between 5 to 10 minutes and is not the radio friendly tracks that one found on recordings such as One and Load. To me this is Metallica going back to basics and this includes well-written lyrics, heavier guitar riffs and a more macho rough sound then one had heard from the band in quite some time. The booklet contains all the lyrics but for some strange reason the artwork is covering up some of the lyrics. Allmusic, Blender and IGN all gave this release high marks in their reviews. The album topped several charts around world, e.g., France, Sweden and Croatia. 4/5.
4 out of 5
2009-11-06 - Metallica can do no wrong by me.
They are legends, masters, almost Gods.
Production on this sucks and that is the only reason I did not award 5 stars.
