Description of Anne of the Thousand Days / Mary, Queen of Scots:
As costume dramas go, this is a passionate and feisty one, keyed by the ever-luminous Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and the sharp-edged Glenda Jackson as her jealous cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (who knew a thing or two about palace intrigue). Mary, who was raised in France as a Catholic, claims the Scottish crown from her mother upon her death. But she runs up against religious prejudice, both from the Protestant Elizabeth (who had encountered anti-Protestant bias before she took the throne) and from Mary's Protestant half-brother James Stuart (Patrick McGoohan). Elizabeth, whose own reign is shaky (given a strong Catholic presence in her country), is nervous about her Catholic cousin--and made more so by Mary's seeming inability to appreciate the political niceties of the period. Redgrave received an Oscar nomination for her performance. --Marshall Fine
Anne of the Thousand Days / Mary, Queen of Scots Reviews:
Jan
2009-11-02 - Very good movie but I wish it was available in all regions in DVD! I live in Australia and can't find it in Region 4 DVD.
this is worth the price you pay for losing your head as a tudor
2009-09-15 - When I found this little gem it was just release, and came across it in a bin at Virgin...., I was quite surprise do to I only wanted Anne of a thousand days...., I have to say to sit there and watch Taylor come in and Burton's own daughter in it is quite the find..., But then to sit threw Mary was another gem...., If your a fan of the Tudors and you can only hope the follow it up to the elizabeths end....these films help you understand and the are worth the price do to the sets and costumes but the acting of the greatest players of history, Jackson, redgrave, and Burtn
Liked Mary Queen of Scots, not so much Anne Boleyn film
2009-06-15 - I really enjoyed Mary Queen of Scots. I've read books and seen many films from Queen Elizabeth I side, but never from Mary's side. It's nice to get a different view on this very interesting time in history. This was a very good movie.
I can't say the same for Anne of a Thousand Days. Richard Burton played a great Henry, but the movie is too sympathetic in its portrayal of Anne Boleyn. They make her out to be simply a victim when she herself was a very ruthless ambitious woman guilty of many evil acts. The movie isn't bad, but I just couldn't get past the unrealistic character they made Anne to be.
Better than the 2008 Other Boleyn Girl
2009-05-21 - Much preferred Anne of the Thousand Days to the 2008 release of The Other Boleyn Girl. Although two very different stories, Anne of the Thousand Days did not cut all the corners that the 2008 Other Boleyn Girl did. As a result, Anne of the Thousand Days was much easier to follow and enjoy.
Very entertaining
2009-05-08 - The recent interest in the Tudors had me go back to see this classic, a wonderful performance by Vanessa Redgrave in the title role, with Glenda Jackson, Elizabeth I the rival queen, Timonty Dalton, her second husband, Patrick McGoohan, her scheming illegitimate brother, Nigel Davenport as the blunt Bothwell, her third husband, and a host of other British acting talent. Mary was misguided and not always the nicest person, but the performance is truly stunning. Great stuff!
Anne of A Thousand Days, a great performance by both leads, especially Burton, an you can see wher the Tudors staff got their ideas from with this film. She is a bit less than fascinating her and far more manipulative than they give her credit for in the miniseries, and the film does not explain why they went 'off the boil' so quickly, but Burton was a titan and the dialogue is very racy and compelling for a movie of the time.
