Description of Invincible:
For such a boldly titled and apparently driven attempt to reinstate Michael Jackson at the center of the pop world, Invincible is a listless thing. Split between scratchy funk workouts and midtempo ballads that might have appeared as Bad B-sides, the album plays on and on while never seriously promoting dancing or romancing. Its handful of weird moments--the resurrection-by-tape of Biggie Smalls on the bridge of the title track, for instance--are hardly large-scale bizarre like the first disc of HIStory. The title track turns out to be hardly the rampant egofest you'd imagine; instead, its subject is a female whom Jackson cheers on. Likewise, the most ear-catching moments of the "comeback" single "You Rock My World" come with Chris Tucker's jivey introduction. Despite a debt to "Payback"-era James Brown, "Rock" floats away like steam midway through. It's almost a relief when the old self-regard turns up: on the growling "Privacy," Jackson rants about muckrakers "stalking" him in search of "the stories you need to bury me," all this long after foundering divas and troubled boy-group members have replaced him on tabloid covers. The man may occasionally break away from the mirror but seems unsure where else to find inspiration. --Rickey Wright
Invincible Reviews:
Something different
2009-12-16 - Mike branched out on this album by moving away from the New Jack style and using a deeper, harsher singing voice. I had to listen to it a couple of dozen times before I could like it because it wasn't was I was expecting, but eventually it grew on me.
Loved this cd
2009-12-09 - I got this cd and i listened to over and over. Great music!! A must for Michael Jackson fans. Even if you are not a fan you will like it.
Invincible is Amazing
2009-12-08 - I love the CD. All of the songs written and sung were magnificent. The music and the words of the song had a lot of meaning and the sound was great. Micheal was a genuis. I don't see why the reviews in the past that I heard about the cd not being good is completely wrong. Actually the only time that I heard about invincible was when Micheal was dead. I wish he was here to make more music. He gets all five stars from me.
One of his best!
2009-12-06 - What a treasure "Invincible" is! Michael's vocals on "Butterflies" alone is worth the album price. He achieves a maturity on this album that is quite thrilling. The highlights for me: "Speechless" is a beautiful ballad, with an a cappella introduction and coda by MJ. (He sings a bit of this song in "This is It!") Carlos Santana provides a guitar solo on "Whatever Happens" that is used to good effect. "Threatened" is a bit "Thriller"-like and the opening of the song is heard at the end of the "Thriller" portion of "This is It!" (There the bass is beefed up and sounds even groovier.) It's a beautifully mixed album. "2000 Watts" sticks in my head and fascinates me. Seth Riggs, MJ's vocal coach, has said he had a three and a half octave range. So, is MJ electronically altered here, or singing it as is? Either way, it's a fun song.
So, "Invincible" is one of my favorite MJ albums. I sure do hope they release some more recent songs he may have recorded.
Don't waste your money
2009-12-06 - I have this album, and there are 16 song on it. There are about 2 or 3 that are actually good. This may explain why only 2 of the songs were actually made into music videos. This album is only good if you are a HUGE Michael Jackson fan, but otherwise, don't waste your money. It's not going to make you feel the way Dangerous or Bad or even Thriller do after you listen to it. Like I said before, this album is really just for the HUGE fans. Casual fans like myself will NOT like this album. I recommend buying just the handful that are good. To me that was Cry, Privacy, and even Speechless. I didn't care for the others, and unless you really love EVERY song the guy sang, you probably won't either.
