Description of The Spirit Room:
"So I'm a little left of center, I'm a little out of tune," sings Michelle Branch on her debut album's "You Get Me." Well, maybe. Branch offers a well-produced pastiche of chiming and strumming guitars, hip-hop-lite beats, quiet-verse-to-louder-chorus templates, and positive thinking. At her best--"If She Only Knew," a propulsive love note to an ex--she rivals the likes of Sixpence None the Richer as likable radio-aimed fare. Catchy and self-expressive while breaking absolutely no ground, Branch also echoes everyone from label-mate Alanis Morissette to the solo Belinda Carlisle. She dies just a little in this crazy mixed-up world, escapes to her secret garden for sunshine in the pouring rain, and ultimately finds her reflection getting clearer. The Spirit Room could be the next bit of pop philosophy to dazzle mainstream audiences. --Rickey Wright
The Spirit Room Reviews:
wonderful
2009-11-10 - the cd was in perfect condition and i got it before i was told it would be here. very happy!!!
Great CD.
2009-04-24 - This is a great CD. If you want a female voice (The Wrecker, Solo Artist)here it is!
Giff
Fulfilling treasure.
2009-01-03 - Michelle Branch has an innocence about her that makes her standout these days. She's your average girl in jeans and a graffic T with an ability to play a guitar well and sing some notes while doing so. "The Spirit Room" comes off to me as an album about Faith, Hence the title of the album. Don't be surprised if you find this it in the Christian/Contemporary section of the music store. The best part of this album on (every song) is the background vocals, As silly as it sounds they're so well blended and charming to listen to. The background vocals along with the chiming guitars against them is so soothing. How well written these songs are just enhances this effect. "The Spirit Room" is an uplifting 'round of numbers. It's clean and enjoyable, "Sweet Misery" is a very relaxing & peaceful song, It has my vote as one of the best on the album. The one thing about "The Spirit Room" that falls short is the album version of "Goodbye To You", The radio edit is much better and should have taken it's place on the final cut. Also the song "Fall" that was recorded in Hansen recording studio isn't available anywhere. Those two things would make this album complete, But I can settle for what's available being that it's so wonderful & well done this project is.
Still great 7 years later
2008-12-26 - This album is still great 7 years after it was initially released. Not too many albums are able to maintain this amount of consistency from the first track to the last track and is able to hold up this well. There are a very few albums that are able to maintain quality thru the entire album. The song "Everywhere" will always be my favorite track not only because it is a great album opener but because it was what sold me on Michelle Branch's style and sound.
I remember when this album came out it was very different for the times. In 2001 artists like Britney Spears dominated the radio. A lot of the female singers sounded very much the same and very "manufactured" by their label. All of the songs were written by other writers with little to no input from the "artist". Michelle Branch was an exception to the rule, writing most of her music and she is able to play the guitar. To me the song became that much more special when the singer is the one who wrote the words because it makes it that much more personal.
There are probably very few people at this point who don't know who Michelle Branch is but if you had just recently discovered her music thru her country band The Wreckers take the time to listen to the samples, you will find this in a very similar the sound of her later work.
Fabulous
2008-11-01 - Entertaining and easy to listen too. Great vocals and guitar. Songs are excellent. Michelle is a very gifted musician and song writer. When can we get more?
