Jonathan Demme's last idiosyncratic film before he went all mainstream and "serious" with The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia is a wacky, energetic comedy that looks at mob life with affection, and established Michelle Pfeiffer as both a stunning leading lady and a consummate character actress. When Angela DeMarco (Pfeiffer), fed up with a house filled with furniture and appliances that "fell off a truck," asks her husband, hit man Frank "the Cucumber" (Alec Baldwin), for a divorce, he laughs at her and tells her she'll never escape the mob's clutches. Opportunity arises, though, in the form of Frank's untimely demise, after he's efficiently dispatched by mob head Tony "the Tiger" (Dean Stockwell, in an Oscar-nominated performance) for having an affair with Tony's mistress. Seizing her opportunity, Angela flees Long Island for the city, taking her son and donating all her possessions to Goodwill. Angela thinks she's finally free, but in reality not only does a lovesick Tony have his eye on her, but she's also being spied on by a government agent (Matthew Modine) who thinks she can lead him to the mob boss. Wild and all over the place, Married to the Mob is a genial mess, grounded by Pfeiffer's phenomenal performance, which perfectly mixes comedy and pathos. Her tentative first steps into mob-free life are both comic and touching to watch, whether she's shyly flirting with Modine or fending off the lecherous advances of Stockwell. Mercedes Ruehl, as Tony's big-haired, slightly crazy, put-upon wife, almost steals the show, especially in the film's shoot-'em-up finale, set in Miami and featuring the wonderful Trey Wilson as Modine's FBI boss. The movie is decidedly slack in places, and suffered some damage in the editing room (take a look at the copious outtakes in the film's end credits), but with its high spirits and delightful details, Married to the Mob will definitely make you an offer you can't refuse. --Mark Englehart

A delightful comedy, don't miss it!
2008-12-01 - In this movie we see a different Michelle Pfeiffer, playing Angela DeMarco, who is married to a hit man named Frank, aka "The Cucumber." With red blondish hair Michelle Pfeiffer is simply stunning!

The film sets the stage by presenting Michelle Pfeiffer as the wife that is at the end of her marriage to a mobster, upset at a house filled with furniture and appliances that are stolen property. We see her as the mother who wants something better for the son the couple has, and when Frank, played by Alec Baldwin, looks for his gun and can't find it, only to have the child go to a drawer and pull it out to give it to his dad, Michelle Pfeiffer knows she must bring this union to an end and asks for a divorce. Frank does not even acknowledge her plea for change and laughs because he thinks it must be a joke.

We see undercover FBI agents following these characters and as Frank enters the club where the mafia gang members meet, the FBI agents, played by Matthew Modine and Oliver Platt mingle with the crowd in search for information.

The Mafia boss is played by Dean Stockwell, who plays the part of Tony "The Tiger." Tony is having an affair with the waitress at the club and we see him give her rather expensive jewelry and make a date to see her that very night at a motel nearby. They are together and when he is about to leave, he realizes that she is staying in the room and begins to doubt her fidelity... and he is right, for she is having an affair...

Angela becomes a widow and Tony the tiger wants her but she refuses to enter into another mob related relationship and gets out of Long Island to go to a real "dump" in New York City, but one that she can afford on her own. She gives away to charity all the contents of her house and along with her son and his dog, they move into a building that leaves much to be desired. But Tony follows her and the fun begins as we see all the characters come together in one of the funniest movies we have seen in quite a while.

The Tiger's wife, played by Mercedes Ruehl is worthy of mention, for her performance as a jealous, boisterous, and vindictive woman adds much pepper to this delightful comedy. Don't miss it!!!


Worst movie of all time
2008-07-26 - This movie is up there with "Ishtar" as one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. I saw it in theatres in 1989 and immediately hated it. Now, I love this thing because it's so horrible. And, I recommend everyone watch it because you will laugh at how stupid this movie is. The best is the singing of "Tony the Tiger." OMG. That singing cracks me up. And, Tony the Tiger guy received an Oscar nomination. Are you kidding me! You've got to watch this movie. It will immediately cause you to lose respect for the Academy, movie producers, directors, actors, extras, and the general movie-going public.

2008-05-09 - A reviewer once wrote somewhere that Michelle Pfeiffer was (and most certainly remains) too beautiful to land steady work. For any number of reasons, I quite agree. Nevertheless, in this role, she's perfect. A street-smart chick from Queens married to an upwardly-mobile wiseguy. The hair; the clothes; snapping chewing gum; the eff-you attitude. The whole package. Then there's Mercedes Ruehl. Ever heard a performance defined as "carpet-chewing"? That's Mercedes in the airport terminal. She goes from sweet, lovey-dovey to homicidal maniac in 4-point-2 seconds. Not only does she steal that scene, she steals the whole flick. She's a tall girl to begin with, but with the heels and the big hair and the tight dress and the costume jewelry hanging off everywhere, and waving a big revolver around, she's a force of nature. And Dean Stockwell plays a perfect, dead-on John Gotti clone. So into this volatile mix they drop Matthew Modine? Whyever for? The role of this FBI agent calls for an actor who can channel Bogart. Matthew Modine? The only explanation for this jarring miscast I can come up with is that over in the next lot they were filming a game-show flick called "Stump The Dummy", with Modine in the role of the dummy, and they said, hey let's get him, he works cheap. Modine sleepwalks through his scenes which just deflates the action, previous, current, and subsequent. And then to compound the error, they make him Pfeiffer's love interest. After being married to a wiseguy for several years, she's going to fall for this drone? Totally out of her character. And one other small matter. When Stockwell shoots Pfeiffer's husband after he found him with his mistress. All wiseguys know who the boss is keeping on the side. And even if a mistake was made, I never heard of a boss capping a soldier over something like this. And the mistress as well. Wives are another matter entirely. See what happened to Joe Pesci in Casino when he fooled around with another man's wife. And the other man wasn't even a made guy. Sure, this is a comedy, but it's not a farce. Keep it real. Buy this movie for Pfeiffer's role and Mercedes' scene.

Pfeiffer fantastic; movie is fun dvd watch
2007-11-24 - I probably wouldn't have been enthralled sitting in a theater watching this film; it's more like a made-for-TV movie. However, for a DVD release, it's a lot of fun. Michelle Pfeiffer gives a great performance as the wife of a mafia hitman who tries to get out of the mob and live a life that's honest. She would be the main reason to purchase this dvd (which I would actually recommend as a rental instead). Mercedes Ruel is also fun to watch as the wife of the head of the mob, Tony the Tiger (Dean Stockwell). The movie drifts in and out from being slightly dark to a juvenile comedy satire. Director Demme did much better with "Something Wild." The DVD is barebones; only a theatrical trailer for an extra, but considering the movie, not much else is really required (although commentary tracks can be interesting).
