Editorial Review:
Minnie Drivers new CD SEASTORIES explores new musical territory, from the rich sonic textures of "Beloved" to the bluesy soul of "Cold Dark River" to the seductive minor key groove of "Mockingbird" to the poetic chamber folk of "Lakewater Hair." Producer Marc "Doc" Dauer and guest musicians Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, Liz Phair and Rami Jaffee (The Wallfowers) match but never overwhelm Driver's vivid lyrics, soaring melodies and spirited performances on this thoroughly pleasing collection of intelligent pop.
"A Triple A Triumph."- Chuck Taylor (Billboard Magazine)
"Driver proves to be Hollywood's soulful surprise." - Gabe Guarente (US Weekly)
"A Minnie-Splendored Thing... Anybody who dismissed Minnie Driver's debut as just the whim of another moonlighting actress will have a hard time denying her now." - Brian Mansfield (USA Today)
"Driver is clearly a confident performer and a songwriter with a style both evocative and economical." - Kevin Bronson (Los Angeles Times)
Description of Seastories:
Minnie Driver is hardly the first starlet to dive into pop music, but on her second album she stretches out for Americana credibility--and only partially succeeds. Writing every song on the album (with just a few musical assists from producer Marc "Doc" Dauer), she positions herself somewhere between Suzanne Vega and Sheryl Crow, getting help from alt-country and roots-rock illuminati Jonny Polansky, Neil Casal, Eric Heywood, Ryan Adams, and Rami Jaffee. The album has a wafting, acoustic-pop ambience, with a few country rockers driving home her serviceably sexy vocals. The problem is her songs barely rise to the level of a Jewel chapbook. Driver obsesses over her own erotic-spiritual journey, and can often create a plaintive, sensual mood, but the material lacks the universal touch of an inspired singer-songwriter. Head-scratching lines like "If love is the answer you seek, you're asking the wrong kind of questions" and "When my shadow cuts my life in two, I can see the best of me is you" suggest she yearns to make a personal statement. Crafting her stories or honing her hooks would have been more convincing. --Roy Kasten
Seastories Reviews:
Extraodinary
2008-10-02 - Extraodinarily different singer and song writer! I would have never taken Minnie Driver to be a singer as well as an actress. There is real talent here and I hope all enjoy!
Seastories
2008-06-20 - I am a FAN!! I have both of herCD, Seastories is my favorite. I reccomend buying both. I have not found a song I didn't enjoy. her voice is smooth,The songs range from reflective, poetry,to rock. She can do it all. I am looking forward to the Cd
Surprisingly Good!
2007-11-06 - I had no idea that Minnie Driver could sing! I came across this cd on Amazon.com while looking for something else and listened to the samples, glad I did! This is a great cd, it has a great sound and lyrics. It is a different type of music for me, but it was definitely a good purchase. I have always enjoyed her acting, now I enjoy her music abilities as well. I would certainly recommend this cd to everyone!!!
who'd of thunk it?
2007-10-18 - Minnie Driver and music? It boggled the mind that such a good actress could sing too? Boy does she, her music is absolutely perfect, her voice clear and it resonates the soul. She has become one of my favorite artist on the iPod! I purchased the first album after this one and will probably buy every one that she releases. Thanks Minnie... I love the music!
Very Good Singer ~ Songwriter CD
2007-10-06 - While Minnie Driver may not be another Joni Mitchell, or Janis Ian (for examples of the apex of the golden age of the Singer ~ Songwriter), that is not to say that this is not a completely worthwhile CD because it is. If you enjoy the idea of the genre, here are more soul bearing songs, well written, and warmly preformed.
Ms. Driver, continues to please and surprise, in this follow-up to "Everything I've got in my pocket". The tone of "SeaStories" is a bit less genuine than say KT Tunstall, but not much. Overall if there weren't so many really good CD's that have been released in the last couple of months, I might have rated this 5 stars, because as I have said about Ms. Driver before, although I find her a wonderful actress, she is NOT an actress making a CD, she is a very good Singer ~ Songwriter who happens to also be a very good actress.
If you enjoy Ms. Driver as an actress, this may be a pleasant surprise.
If you are looking for a CD that has good songwriting, soothingly sexy vocals, and completely professional production, then this is a CD to Buy.
