Description of The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition):
After all the controversy and rigorous debate has subsided, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ will remain a force to be reckoned with. In the final analysis, "Gibson's Folly" is an act of personal bravery and commitment on the part of its director, who self-financed this $25-30 million production to preserve his artistic goal of creating the Passion of Christ ("Passion" in this context meaning "suffering") as a quite literal, in-your-face interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, scripted almost directly from the gospels (and spoken in Aramaic and Latin with a relative minimum of subtitles) and presented as a relentless, 126-minute ordeal of torture and crucifixion. For Christians and non-Christians alike, this film does not "entertain," and it's not a film that one can "like" or "dislike" in any conventional sense. (It is also emphatically not a film for children or the weak of heart.) Rather, The Passion is a cinematic experience that serves an almost singular purpose: to show the scourging and death of Jesus Christ in such horrifically graphic detail (with Gibson's own hand pounding the nails in the cross) that even non-believers may feel a twinge of sorrow and culpability in witnessing the final moments of the Son of God, played by Jim Caviezel in a performance that's not so much acting as a willful act of submission, so intense that some will weep not only for Christ, but for Caviezel's unparalleled test of endurance.
Leave it to the intelligentsia to debate the film's alleged anti-Semitic slant; if one judges what is on the screen (so gloriously served by John Debney's score and Caleb Deschanel's cinematography), there is fuel for debate but no obvious malice aforethought; the Jews under Caiaphas are just as guilty as the barbaric Romans who carry out the execution, especially after Gibson excised (from the subtitles, if not the soundtrack) the film's most controversial line of dialogue. If one accepts that Gibson's intentions are sincere, The Passion can be accepted for what it is: a grueling, straightforward (some might say unimaginative) and extremely violent depiction of the Passion, guaranteed to render devout Christians speechless while it intensifies their faith. Non-believers are likely to take a more dispassionate view, and some may resort to ridicule. But one thing remains undebatable: with The Passion of the Christ, Gibson put his money where his mouth is. You can praise or damn him all you want, but you've got to admire his chutzpah. --Jeff Shannon
The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition) Reviews:
There was no S0domy! :(
2009-12-25 - I was looking forward to a nice family snuff film for this Christmas eve. It had lots of those violence and blood and gory that I really enjoyed like all the rest of the Christians out there but I only wish there was more thrashing and more blood. It just wasn't enough. I mean, 2 hrs of nothing but whipping and blood but it could have gone on for 2 more hours, just when I was getting into it, it was over. Did you see those flesh just come off those frail bones? What about those crunchy sounds in 7.1 Dolby Digital eh! Those investments on those Home theater sure paid off eh! just to hear that sound of flesh peeling of that Mel Gibson so deliciously brought to our Christian ears was so delirious! My Young uns who had just returned from "Jesus Camp" were delirious too when they watched this movie with me , They were frothing in the mouth and were in a zone. Don't you just luve to see your yong uns being so spirityal? Bless their tiny blessed Christian hearts! . . WOW! I felt like Dracula in a candy store for vampires but just when I was about to swallow, they pulled the candy from my hands.. I so enjoyed the bloke being whupped, I had tears in my eyes like every christian in the theater. I so so enjoyed it like the other Christians who were sitting next to me! So I'll give it three stars. Only wish it went on and on and on. But I plan to put this on never ending loop on my DVD player so I can enjoy this movie every day from the first moment I wake up. I can't get enough of this stuff... Luv it Luv it Luv it Luv it.. Bring more of this good stuff Mel Gibson. You are truly God sent! You da man!
I am a good Christian and so I should respect Mel Gibson for giving me this amazing DVD. Mel Gibson could also produce a prime time sitcom and since I am good Christian, I would use this as my prayer hour and watch daily. So all ye good Christians, lets start a letter campaign to request Mel Gibson to bring this good stuff on TV we can watch it with our young uns during prime time! This is better than Church!
Now, I need to see that movie on "The rapture" I hear that too had some gory kiIIings and people being s0domized and beaten.... Man, I am so glad I am a Christian where I can get to watch these goooooood stuffs! Wish all those Jews would convert and become like us and enjoy this bIoody flick!
I luv Christian spirituality! IT makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside and know how those non believers are going to get what they deserve while I get to sit next to God in the kingdom of heaven. I can truly sleep well at night knowing that I would have a good time while those people I told and never listened to me gets to burn crispy crispy! All those non Christians out there would get far more beatings than our Jesus got. Imagine every one of those heathens being beaten to pulp like our Jesus was beaten just for not listening to our christian message. My god is a Jealous God and I want to be on the side of this Jealous god cause that is is so much clever than being with some non Jealous God! ...so you better watch it! I now need to train my young uns to be a good soldier for this jealous God so they can spend their whole life for this jealous God. Thats why I send them to "Jesus Camp".
There are many critics of this movie saying that this is not Christianity. I disagree. THIS IS WHAT CHRISTIANITY IS ALL ABOUT! This is everything about Christianity, right here for all to see! I LOVE IT. Thank you Jesus!
I am truly saved indeed. Who would you rather be with? A Jealous god or a non Jealous God?! Which is a better bet? Trust me and hedge your bets with the more evil...err..the kind jealous one, so you can be saved (wink Wink). I can't wait to share the good word with others living in South Korea, India, Sri Lanka and all those other heathens who have never heard of Christianity and what Christianity has done to the South American, Native Americans and the Jews and most recently in Rwanda! We need to do to those Asian Buddhist and Hindus what we did to these American Indians, Jews, Africans who were brought to the Americas, South Americans and most recently to the Rwandans. Onward Christian soldiers!
This is what Christianity is all about. Creating a victim mentality among our young uns has made us the Goliath of all religions. This "victim-hood" strategy is the greatest strategy for the grown of such a faith. Like it has helped the growth of Islam, it has helped us Christians too! Quantity, Growth like weeds, is everything! We cannot allow any flowering of other diverse spiritual quests out there in this world. Christianity cannot content with erecting an altar of our own. We have first to destroy the pagan altars like Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism. It is only in virtue of this passionate intolerance that an apodictic faith like ours could grow up. And intolerance is an indispensable condition for the growth of such a faith as ours with such directive from our Jealous God!
Can't wait to spread all these Christian goodness! Imagine if the vast majority of the people in this world hold such values, see what would happen to the ones who are not Christians. We Christians are the richest and most powerful enterprise of this world. We are determined to use all facility to destroy other non Christian faiths. We have succeeded in South Korea, we are well ahead in India and Sri Lanka. Although we are the Golaith, we have to pretend to be the David. The victim. Get it? That has served us the last 2000 years, we should continue this strategy at every walk of life here at home and abroad! They don't stand a chance! Ha Ha! (Except for those pesky Islamists who believes in an even jealousor God than ours..Should we hedge our bets here too? Hmmm.....)
PS: IMO, Mel Gibson is a better film maker than Leni Riefenstahl in the art of arousing such passion in me and in my young uns!
The Passion of the Christ
2009-12-18 - This film was so well done. Mel Gibson took a great risk to make a film version of a historical event that is so well known and cherished. There were times that I could not stop crying. This is a very powerful movie.
Will Give You Pause To Think About The Reality Of The Crucifixion
2009-12-15 - Until I saw this film, my visual representation of the events that transpired during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was confined to TBN specials or staged Passion Plays, where the crown of thorns is made of styrofoam, the "blood" is red food-coloring, and the nails go in between the fingers, not through them. That all changes with "The Passion of the Christ".
I don't want to get into the nit-picking of this film, as in all honesty I do not have a strong scriptural grasp on all the passages that director Mel Gibson tries to portray, but instead I view it from just one perspective: Beginning with the night that Jesus was taken into Roman custody until the stone was rolled away from the tomb, this film is a very visceral interpretation of one possible scenario that may have played out. It is sort of like a "historical-fiction" telling of the crucifixion story, as no one knows exactly what transpired.
From a plot perspective, the film doesn't at all delve into the meaning of Jesus' crucifixion (to save the world from their sins so we can join him in heaven someday), but takes a "just the facts, m'am" approach to the story. Jesus is captured by the Romans, tried by King Herod and Pontius Pilate, beaten mercilessly and humiliated, and then crucified...the end. The violent acts committed during these scenes are startling, to say the least, yet they do shed light on how difficult a process this was for Jesus to endure, as (at the time) he was confined to a mortal body and bound by its limitations.
Thus, if you are at all squeamish about bloody violence, steer clear of this film at all costs. However, if you are a veteran of, say, the "Saw" films and would like a more realistic portrayal of the single most important moment in human history, this is your film.
Nothing new here
2009-12-10 - If you like to see a mean beaten mercilessly for 2.5 hours, this is the movie for you.
As far as the story goes.... what story? There is nothing here that we haven't heard a millions times -- it is just re-rendered in ultra-graphic, sadistic technicolor. Yes, there are many violent movies out there, but few that make that violence quite so intimate and relentless. I haven't counted, but I'd wager that there is maybe 10 minutes of footage where Jesus is not being beaten, and blood dripping from those wounds. It is pure cruelty. Why anyone would enjoy watching this is beyond me.
Yes, other movies are violent, but this is typically a device used for contrast; a price for wisdom gained. As I have stated, there is no wisdom gained here. There is almost no footage dedicated to the teachings of this great man. There is nothing imaginative or transcendent about this film, it is just cruelty on celluloid. A spectacle of his supreme sacrifice.
The shooting of this film in Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin is just a joke. Again, it adds nothing to the story. It is like putting the Irish Flag on an American beer, and passing it off as a "Premium Lager". Somehow, because this film was shot in cryptic languages, this makes it more "official" than those other Jesus films made in English... The Irish flag may fool those buffoons with a poor palate, but for the real connoisseurs -- they aren't fooling anyone.
This movie imparts nothing, except that we should feel guilty about what ancient people's did to a great man. Guilt is cheap. Violence is cheap. Give me Wisdom, Solomon asked for no less.
The Passion of Christ
2009-12-08 - I Love this movie, but of course i cry everytime i watch it. Anyone who is a believer, must feel the pain as they whip this man. I would whis everyone to watch it.
