Editorial Review:
Winner of the Academy Award for best picture of 1989, this gracefully moving drama, adapted from the hit play by Alfred Uhry, chronicles the 25-year friendship between a stubborn, aging Southern widow (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). At first, the self-sufficient Miss Daisy is reluctant to accept the services of a chauffeur, but Hoke is quiet, wise, and tolerant, and as the years pass the unlikely friends develop a deep mutual respect and admiration. Tandy deservedly won the Oscar for her sassy and sensitive performance, and Freeman earned an Oscar nomination for bringing quiet depth and integrity to his memorable role. Ironically, director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies) was not nominated, but the film won Oscars for makeup and for Uhry's screenplay, in addition to a supporting actor nomination for Dan Aykroyd as Daisy's supportive son. Delicate, funny, and bittersweet, Driving Miss Daisy was a surprise hit when released, and marked the crowning achievement of Tandy's great career. --Jeff Shannon
Driving Miss Daisy [Region 2] Reviews:
Driving Miss Daisy
2009-11-18 - This is a classic film. The acting is right on and the plot teaches much about racial discrimination. I use it every year with my English 11 classes.
Driving Miss Daisy
2009-11-18 - This DVD came in a timely manner. It was in excellet shape when I received it. I was very pleased.
Upconvert Daisy
2009-11-16 - Tossed the VCR tape. Poor is an understatement.
HD TV, HDMI, the DVD version of Daisy is the only way to go provided an HDMI DVD player.
Upconvert HDMI is from 480 to 1080 for current large screen LCD HD TV's.
Same for Plasma.
The result is not HD or Blueray but very good. As good as theatre screen play.
Don't miss the hour DVD play providing the background and difficulties of making this movie.
Amazing that Daisy acting talent was brought to the screen by equally creative management and production.
Still a wonderful film BUT THE OLD HORRIBLE DVD HOLDER
2009-08-21 - I have always really enjoyed this film. Took me long enough to get it on DVD.
Glad to have it widescreen.
A heart warming story between Daisy & Hoke.
It deserved the Best Picture Oscar as did Jessica. MORGAN SHOULD HAVE WON BEST ACTOR, HE DESERVED IT.
Dan, got an Oscar nomination as well. 1989 with this & "Ghostbusters 2", his career just basically stopped right there. Never had another hit film or TV show.
In these old fashion, GLAD THEY STOPPED MAKING THESE, CARD BOARD DVD holder. I have ALWAYS hated these things.
OK extras on it
Film needs a new DVD release.
