Description of Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition):
As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist’s Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition) Reviews:
    Wanted 5 Star Review
2009-12-17 - Wanted was by far one of the very best action movies for 2008. It was a very fun wild ride from start to finish. It had many twists, turns, gore, blood, and action. Just strap in and get ready for a roller coaster ride of your life.

A loom? are you serious? 1 Star Review
2009-12-13 - This movie is offensively bad. I mean really, really incredibly stupid. Watch it just to laugh at it. This movies success is proof of de-evolution. Who likes stuff like this? Finger painting monkeys could have written a better story. This is a perfect example of everything I don't like about modern action movies.

I'd site specific reasons why I think this movie is so bad, but I don't want to "spoil it" (ha! like it could get worse) for anyone who hasn't witnessed the idiocy-made-flesh that is this abomination.

You want to see a good action movie? Watch Dirty Harry. I know it's old and not as flashy, but it has things like acting and a story that makes sense. As far as something more recent, I didn't love Transporter, but compared to this it was poetic genius. Uwe Boll must LOVE this movie.

    Disappointment 1 Star Review
2009-12-12 - Bought this BD along with a well recommended LG BD Player and not to mention other BD titles. All the BD's that I bought (through amazon at the same time with this title) seemed to have worked perfectly with the LG BD Player EXCEPT for this one. Bought this around October and it has never been opened till today because I was waiting for the perfect time to watch it. So disappointing.

Non-stop action and incredible stunts! 5 Star Review
2009-12-05 - Believe the laws of physics don't exist just for a moment and sink yourself into this incredible assasin fraternity fantasy. Very entertaining!

Amazing (and yes, unbelievable) action 4 Star Review
2009-11-30 - This movie is great for anyone looking for great action sequences which aren't necessarily realistic. You need to do a bit more than the usual "suspension of disbelief" here. If you can accept this movie's ideas such as bullets that can curve around objects (there's more than 1 "magic bullet" here...) then you'll enjoy it. I don't know how they did the effects and stunts, but they are some of the most entertaining action scenes I've seen. Sequences such as one where a car jumps off another car to spin over a third car are enough to make you go "wow".

There's more to the movie than just action. The story is fairly interesting, centering around a secret society of assassins who are supposedly working to maintain order in the world. James McAvoy's character Wesley is one whom many people will be able to identify with - stuck in a boring cubicle job with a boss he hates, a girlfriend who holds him in contempt, and a "best friend" with whom the girlfriend is cheating. Clearly, he's more than a little unsatisfied with his life so he soon jumps at the chance of a completely different life when the assassin Fox (Angelina Jolie) springs into his life. He soon meets the head of the assassins, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), who tells him all about his father, an assassin who was recently killed by a rogue member. Wesley then trains to become an assassin to go after his father's killer. The movie also has the prerequisite plot twist in addition to the many car chase and fight scenes and explosive final confrontation.

The acting by McAvoy, Jolie, and Freeman is very good, as you would expect from those of their caliber; however, the best part about the movie is the action sequences. With special effects reminiscent of "The Matrix", the action can be unrealistic at times but never disappoints. There's never a dull moment. If you enjoy action movies with a bit of a story, give this one a try.
