A young boy's bigger-than-life imaginary friend ends up being as much help to the boy's disbelieving godmother. Whoopi Goldberg and Gerard Depardieu in a spirited all-family charmer directed by Norman Jewison (Moonstruck) Year: 1996 Director: Norman Jewison Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Gerard Depardieu, Haley Joel Osment

    Description of Bogus:
Doing for orphaned children what Ghost did for grieving lovers, Bogus is a sweet-natured fantasy that's sure to have some viewers reaching for a Kleenex. With The Sixth Sense still three years in his future, Haley Joel Osment plays 7-year-old Albert, whose happy life is disrupted when his mother (Nancy Travis) is killed in a traffic accident. Her will stipulates that Albert be placed in the custody of his mom's little-known half-sister, Harriet (Whoopi Goldberg), a New Jersey restaurant-supply owner who's anything but motherly. That's when Albert invents Bogus (Gerard Depardieu), an imaginary friend who springs to life from a coloring book drawing--clearly the product of Albert's need for love and companionship. It's easy to see why director Norman Jewison was drawn to the challenge of this delicate, charmingly cast fantasy/drama whimsically written by Alvin Sargent (Oscar®-winner for Ordinary People), and there are some lovely moments that capture a fleeting sense of wonder. But like the similar fantasy Three Wishes, the magic is lightweight and it doesn't always work. Your best bet is to just surrender to the sentiment, and don't be surprised if you shed a tear or two. --Jeff Shannon

    Bogus Reviews:
A True Sleeper! 5 Star Review
2008-06-05 - The first time I knew this movie existed, I found it movie in the DVD section at my local library. I never heard about it... never saw a trailer anywhere... never saw or read any reviews about it anywhere. So I borrowed it because Haley Joel Osment was in it, whom I think is a wonderful child actor. What an absolutley delightful and beautifully crafted movie this is. Others before told you of the plot. I will just say this: HOW can such a gem have been so inadequately promoted or recognized?? Why has it been kept so secret? But, like a true treasure, this film sparkels. Everything in it works so well: casting, direction, acting, music, visuals.... it is a masterpiece! This is how a movie is supposed to be made. Wonderful... simply wonderful!

    "Bogus" 5 Star Review
2008-03-25 - This movie is well written and performed. Very insightful into the thinking of children and adults. Wonderfully funny and very entertaining. Great casting of Whoopi, Gerard Depardieu and Haley Joel Osment (who will steel your heart). I cannot imagine this movie with anyone of these actors not in those parts. THEY ARE PERFECT.

Nothing "Bogus" about this film except the title 4 Star Review
2008-03-10 - How does anyone cope with a situation that's almost intolerable? In young Albert's (Osment) case, he invents an imaginary friend "Bogus" (Depardieu) when his Mom dies and he's forced to move from familiar Las Vegas to New Jersey with a Godmother, Harriet, (Goldberg) that he's never met before.

But, Bogus isn't just a figment of Albert's imagination. He's a just a part of the magic that connects us all.

"Bogus" is a film that both parents and kids can enjoy. It's warm, funny, and worthwhile. I think Osment and Depardieu have to be one of the best acting teams ever. Whoopi Goldberg is always a delight.

    Bogus 5 Star Review
2007-05-13 - Whoopie!! Need anyone say more? No matter what she does, it is done with taste and humor. Even when the language gets a little blue, I have to ignor it and enjoy her acting ability. I am in the process of finding all of her many movies on Amazon, and ordering them one or two at a time. Many thanks for having one of the lesser known ones-Bogus-I have been searching for it for years. It really touches your heart and fills you with laughter. Yours as usual, Patricia A. Adams

Really cut movie 4 Star Review
2007-03-13 - Why do some of you think Whoopi's character didn't like the boy because he was white? I'm pretty sure his mom was white and she and Whoopi were friends!

This is such a cute movie. I just love the little boy and the way he acts.
