Description of Left of the Middle:
A cross between Alanis Morissette and Kylie Minogue, you couldn't engineer a more likely late '90s pop star than Natalie Imbrugila if you tried. Blessed with a stunning bone structure and a passable voice, Australian soap star Imbruglia and producer Phil Thornally turned Ednaswap's gritty "Torn" into a swirling pop confection. Nothing else on her debut quite matches it, in part because Left of the Middle hews closer to the center than it cares to admit. Imbruglia manages to touch on a wide range of female styles--angry ("One More Addiction"), electronica ("Big Mistake"), and yearning ("Smoke")--without leaving her fingerprints on any of them. --Steven Mirkin
Left of the Middle Reviews:
One Of My Favorite albums to date
2009-08-14 - When I think of alot of the female artists in 2009 that are in their early 20's like Ashley Tisdale who sings and sounds like a 4th grader at 24, It's hard to believe Natalie was only 22 when this album was released. She has been so overlooked in America for some strange reason I don't know of. Her songwriting abilities are unbeleivable, and that voice is outstanding. Thank GOD for acts like her. "Left Of The Middle" is only 12 songs but seems so much longer in a sense. Natalie tampers with just about every music genre if you listen, Jazz, RnB, Soul, Pop, Electronic & Mid-90's Hip-Hop N Bass, It's all here for you. She's pissed like Alanis Morissette, bluesy like Fiona Apple, She has the poise of Sheryl Crow and Jewels tenderness. "Left Of The Middle" is so well-rounded and is my favorite Natalie Imbruglia set. I laughed at some of the one-star-reviews, I never realized how boring people actually think she is- that's just so funny to me. She has such a great voice.
A GREAT ALBUM!!!
2009-07-14 - I love this album- ever have since it was released! She has an ecellent singing voice, strong lyrics and catchy music. I like almost every song on here and am very glad I have this in my collection. If you like the song "Torn" which got a lot of airplay then you likely enjoy the album. Highly recommended!
Nice vocals
2008-12-09 - Left of the Middle is fifty minutes and forty- six seconds and was released on November 24, 1997. Left of the Middle reached #10 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album and has since gone double Platinum. This is Natalie Imbruglia debut album. The CD charted two songs, Torn and Wishing I Were There. The song Torn charted number one in three different categories: Billboard Hot 100 Airplay, Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, and Billboard Top 40 Mainstream. I bought this CD when I worked at Goodwill. It was on sale plus my employee discount; so I got it for next to nothing. I mainly bought for change in pace in music style. This is not a bad CD to listen to. The songs are a joy to listen to and she has an excellent voice. If I listen to more of her songs on the radio, I might have given it the five stars. Since this is my first CD that I own of her, then I must stick with the four stars. Left of the Middle by Natalie Imbruglia gets a B+.

"My mouth is dry, forgot how to cry..."
2007-11-18 - This was an album I had back in the day, Natalie Imbruglia's Left of the Middle had a lot of potential to be a great pop record but unfortantely many of the tracks fall flat. Songs I do appreciate are Torn, Big Mistake, Wishing I was There, Smoke, and Left of the Middle. The rest of the songs are aimless filler. Imbruglia does have a gorgeous voice but her inconsistent songwriting drags these songs down. This album is an oldie but not so goodie. Nice try Natalie!
Classic? Perhaps.
2007-01-13 - While it is a good album, none of the songs are as great as Torn. But maybe it's because when I listen to Torn, it still feels the same as the first time I listened to it when I was 7 years old. I'm 17 now. Natalie's other albums are much better. I'd recommend White Lilies Island over this.
