Editorial Review:
UK pressing of the 2007 sophomore album from this R&B star featuring one bonus track: 'That's What It Does'. Because Of You is the follow-up to his multi-million selling debut album In My Own Words (including the hits 'So Sick' and 'Sexy Love'). Last year, Ne-Yo also proved himself a masterful songwriter, penning such gems as Rihanna's top-ten hit 'Unfaithful', co-writing Beyonce's instant classic 'Irreplaceable' and writing Mario's 'Let Me Love You'. 13 tracks including the first single 'Because Of You'. Def Jam.
Description of Because Of You:
Kelly Clarkson, kindly step aside: the title "Because of You" now belongs to Ne-Yo, who has done things with it no one with a pair of hands to clap will soon forget. And not just on the phenomenally appealing first single. Throughout Because of You, the sophomore disc by the songwriter responsible for such monster hits as Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable" and Rihanna's "Unfaithful," a flutter-voiced fluidity--the kind seldom heard since Michael Jackson's Off the Wall days--reigns. Jay-Z makes room to let it rip on "Crazy," and Jennifer Hudson wraps herself around it with restraint on "Leaving Tonight," a lovers' quarrel that could hold its own against anything Marilyn McCoo & Billy David Jr. cared to toss off in their heyday. If it's MJ who's lingered in Ne-Yo's ear longest, Prince hasn't gone silent, either: echoes poke up on the far-out "Sex with My Ex." Elsewhere, shades of contemporaries such as Nelly and Diddy show through. Overall, though, Ne-Yo's flammable hooks, flirty vibe, and flawless vocals reveal an R&B genius in the making. If the talent bar for up-and-comers is set impossibly high in the coming years, chances are it will be all because of him. --Tammy La Gorce
Because Of You Reviews:
The title may be a "double entendre"
2009-08-27 - Many have said that Ne-Yo's music on this sophomore album sounds similar to that of artists like the late Michael Jackson and Prince, to name a few. Perhaps that was intentional, thus, the title "Because of You." Of course, "Because of You" is the title of one of the selections and that song is a mid-tempo number, apparently paying tribute to the singer's "significant female other". However, one can interpret the song as well as several others as paying homage to those artists that have inspired the singer or served as musical "role models" for his singing and songwriting skills.
Certainly, the songs like "Addicted", "Can We Chill", "Sex with My Ex", and "Crazy", though contemporary with their beats and rhythms, could easily fit on earlier albums by MJ or Prince, and that may have been Ne-Yo's intent.
Even the cover is slightly reminiscent of one of the four version of MJ's last studio recording, "Invincible."
Comparisons put aside, "Because of You" is a solid four-star album, representative of the young musician at his most creative, and is actually better than his follow-up "Year of the Gentleman."

OK CD, NOT GOOD AMAZON
2009-03-30 - The CD ok, borderline boring, but I only bought it for one song anyways. Call it an impulse buy. The only issue was that it had a TARGET sticker on it and had 2 scratches on the case. NEW PRODUCT? NOPE.
One of the best CD's Ever
2008-10-25 - Ne-Yo is such a great artist and this album is no exception. I can play every song. I listen to this album all the way through without skipping any songs. If you do not already own it you need to buy it now as well as his others IN My Own Words and Year of the Gentleman.
Love of Ne-Yo...
2008-08-30 - I am a BIG fan of Neyo and this CD is WONDERFUL!I love his style..!
Ne-Yo a step backward ?
2008-07-12 - I think Ne-Yo's second effort is most likely a step back from his first effort . Where so sick, when your mad and sexy love really made me feel his music. I don't think this album was as strong a think because of you,go on girl where his best efforts and his duet with Jennifer Hudson was great the rest is kinda just there I think he needs to move away from only love songs and try some new things as he does'nt appear as versatile as say J.Holiday but he is several notches above Chris Brown I am also feel perhaps Ne-Yo is rushing his product out as soon he will have a 3rd album out he may need to step back as he may risk becoming over exposed . Ne-Yo is a very good vocalist along with a great songwriter but he must build to being a more complete artist .
