Editorial Review:
One of the most tragic stories of the 1990’s rock world was that of singer Shannon Hoon, and his band, Blind Melon. Despite scoring one of the decade’s most enduring singles and videos, “No Rain,”and a quadruple platinum hit with their 1992 self-titled debut album (in addition to touring alongside rock’s biggest names), Hoon could not overcome a dangerous drug addiction. Only two records into a promising career, Hoon was dead from an overdose at the age of 28. ‘A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other’ is the first book to tell the group’s story—culled from over 50 exclusive interviews (including the surviving band members and those closest to the band) and featuring many never-before-seen photos. “I am honored that Greg has painstakingly accounted for what the hell happened during those crazy times. He has summed up all the chaos, jubilation, and paranoia that is Blind Melon.” -Brad Smith, Blind Melon bassist
A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon Reviews:
Fun, Informative, & Poignant
2009-10-28 - Great read. Feels like a behind the scenes look at Blind Melon and their music. Gives everything a whole new feel with resonating effects. This book makes Blind Melon's music even more touching.
A HIGHLIGHT IN ROCK MUSIC LITERATURE
2009-09-01 - After having read "The devil on one shoulder..." I can say it's a must not only to a Blind Melon fan.
The style is not new. However, the freshness of the content, the approach to each and every voice of this choral book, the relevance these voices had in the story and success of the band and the way Greg Prato lets them flow have made the book such a remarkable piece of art and the best document of a band I've ever read.
As a fan -not the best by far but totally enchanted by the music and voice, as well by the tragical end both times- I must say that once I read it I needed to do so again (for a person that has studied literature and philology, believe me this is a recognition on the excellent work done).
Now I can say that Summer'09 was the one when I read this book.
You see, in personal terms I'm living one of the best years in my life and Prato's book has helped me feel so.
Really, you may have not heard about Blind Melon and if you dare to read it you'll feel the need to go listen to their music to love them as much as the one in the book. It's the best way to live the band if you were not lucky to be contemporary of their blessed and unfortunate existence.
Great document! I love it.
Thank you Greg for the hard work.
Must Have
2009-08-13 - As a huge Blind Melon fan i could not have been more pleased with this book, it's a must read for all fans. The format of all quotes is unique and works perfectly to tell their story first hand.
Welcome to Blind Melon, a must buy!
2009-05-27 - After reading this book it will be bring you to a different level if you are a fan and if you were not it will introduce you to Blind Melon the proper way. Their music was always was so raw and pure but I think after reading this book you can truly sit down and appreciate it on a whole different level. I think after reading the book you stop becoming a fan and you become a family member. It really brings the band from Oh my God! There Blind Melon!!!!! To this is Blind Melon a great group of musicians who truly loved what they did and created music at its purest level and for that you love them more as individual artist. This is what I think Blind Melon wanted to achieve through their music. I think the best way to describe it is that you truly start hearing the music because of its creation instead of listening to it because they were a great band.
Thank you Greg Prato for writing this book! I read a lot of books. I can truly say that this has been the best book to read so far. For those wondering what it is about, it is best describe that the author, Greg Prato, selected a subject for each Chapter and used a series of interview answers from friends and band members to tell the story. This book provides no bias opinions, just multiple views on the Blind Melon story.
This is it.
2009-05-16 - This is the one for all the lemonheads out there! Greg Prato has made it possible for all the fans to get inside of those crazy, yet still productive years of Blind Melon and Shannon Hoon. This is the spoken word from people who where there witnessing the bright flame of Shannon and Blind Melon. But as they brightest flame burns quickest...
Strongly recommended, keep on rockin, Blind Melon, Greg and lemonheads all over the world!
