American Stars 'N Bars Reviews:
A one song CD
2009-10-24 - I hate buying a CD for one song. This one actually needs to be played on a DVD machine. Why this was done is a wonderment to me, or I'm just ignorant. As far as this album goes there's only one song on it that I really like, "Like A Hurricane". The rest of the music I can take or leave. I love Neil Young but there's lots of filler on this one. If you want Like A Hurricane as bad as I did then I guess I'm not the only one that buys CD's for one song. You'd think the artists could do better than this for their listening audience.
Good, but not sadly multichannel.
2009-10-11 - I bought this specifically to hear my favourite Neil Young track 'Like A Hurricane' in multi-channel sound, and was hugely disappointed as a result because it is only in stereo. Alas that was my stupidity for not checking first but the overall sound quality is acceptable, so hey ho maybe I'll learn from my mistake? I wonder though why they went to the trouble of making a DVD audio when a CD would have sufficed?
Sounds just OK
2009-03-06 - I recently upgraded my stereo equipment, so I figured I'd snap up some of Neil's DVD-A's. I received this one along with Hawks & Doves yesterday in the mail. Both were mastered the same way. I have a Toshiba DVD player that can play DVD-Audio, but maxes out at 96kHz (only two choices can be made on the Toshiba's audio setup screen: 48kHz or 96kHz) . I run a digital coax from the DVD player into my new Denon 2809CI receiver and it shows that these discs are being decoded at 88.2kHz on my system... which is half of the possible 176kHz, but double the 44.1kHz of a regular CD. Anyhow, when I compare Stars 'N Bars to Hawks & Doves, it's Hawks & Doves that really shines. Stars 'N Bars wasn't all that impressive sonically. I suppose when I upgrade to a BluRay player, I'll see if the 176kHz makes any difference... but I somehow doubt it on this particular release, as it seems the limitations I'm hearing are in the master tapes, since Hawks & Doves sounds so much better.
Neil's more recent audio DVD releases (apparently not exactly DVD-audio, but DVD video containing the "hi-res" audio), were mastered at 96kHz/24 bit (Prairie Wind, Chrome Dreams II, Massey Hall, Sugar Mountain, and Live at the Fillmore East) . So I can only guess that the 176kHz/24 DVD-Audio is more than is really needed or Neil would keep pumpin' those out.
DVD audio does not play!
2008-12-23 - I have a DVD audio player (Pioneer 565) and this disc does not play in my player. I passed it to a friend who also has a DVD audio player and it plays in his player/ Go figure. I love dvd audio so this is a big disapointement!
Classic Neil but just that
2008-11-16 - I am a Neil fan, I love this album, I have it in vinyl from the original release date. If you are a Neil fan, you know it wasn't re-released for QUITE a while. This is a 5 star album BUT; this release however, is a disappointment. Not multi-channel, no better quality than the vinyl, a few nice snapshots of Neil from back in the day. That said, if you don't have the version of "Hurricane" from "Star & Bars", you need to buy this.
