Editorial Review:
What we have here is easily Mr. Young's finest work in years, one that erases the memory of his well-intentioned but anemic 2006 protest album, Living with War. Recorded using analog gear, with Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, and Rick Rosas on bass, CD2 manages to sound both home-grown and experimental. It's the work of an artist still not afraid to take chances, who also knows what his strengths are and doesn't stray too far from them. Trainspotters will note that three of the ten songs were written but never released before, while we all might puzzle over the title. Chrome Dreams is the name of an unreleased album from 1977. So, why is this Chrome Dreams II? Is it a similar case to 1992's Harvest Moon, when Young went back to the virtual land of his 1972 hit Harvest to write more material in that vein? As the original was reportedly lost in a fire, we may never know. Chrome Dreams II offers up gorgeous, plaintive laments and country-tinged numbers sung in that achy breaky, heart-on-sleeve voice of Young's, as well as ragged barn-storming rockers delivered with a growl. There's even an 18-minute dirge that excitedly mixes R&B back-up horns with searing electric guitar leads! Wow. --Mike McGonigal

Chrome Dreams II CD/DVD Special Edition Reviews:
Not as good as I hoped 3 Star Review
2008-04-11 - I was a little surprised with this CD/DVD.

There are some great tracks such as Ordinary People & Beautiful Blue Bird, but there are several fillers too.

I feel Neil is trying to get some of his unreleased stuff out too hastily.

I'd rather he take more time and release a good polished studio CD such as Silver & Gold was.

Music = A+ / DVD= E 4 Star Review
2008-02-23 - The CD is as good as I thought it would be! Neil has continued to keep cranking out excellent music. I would have to say "Don't buy the bonus DVD!" It is nothing more than music with some pictures. Not every good pictures, just a bunch of crap to look at. Like rusty old cars and stuff. I am upset I wasted the extra couple dollars on it. I would have rather just got the music cd!

Chrome Dreams II - CD/DVD Special Edition 3 Star Review
2008-01-14 - Love the CD, but the DVD was a disappointment - I thought it would have contained some of his live concert, but it is only still life photos.

Rock stars die at 30? 3 Star Review
2008-01-07 - "No Hidden Path" is 14+ minutes of exactly what has kept so many of us keeping tabs on this RRHOF icon. On a par with "Down by the River" and "Like a Hurricane", Mr. Young makes his bid for jam-Heaven favorite. Why he doesn't play like this on a perpetual basis is truly a mystery - it's a great, great track.

The rest of the album is surprising good for Neil Young, especially at the geriatric stage. "Ordinary People" is 18+ minutes of perhaps this artist's best lyrics, and there's a few more worth liking, too. All in all, not a bad accomplishment for anyone of his vintage.

Young Neil Young 5 Star Review
2007-12-30 - For Neil Young fans there is little need to say much more than he Harvests another great album. He is in great form for this one. Youth springs eternal.
