Editorial Review:
His first ever CD greatest-hits collection, Neil Young's Greatest Hits is a long-awaited retrospective from one of rock's most influential and enduring singer-songwriters. With 16 selections spanning his entire career since 1969, Greatest Hits features some of the greatest hits of rock'n'roll, period. Also available is a CD+DVD package that includes the original stereo master mixes (for highest resolutation listening) photo gallery and other bonuses.
Description of Greatest Hits (CD/DVD):
One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Faithful followers are at least treated to videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links in this two-disc version. --Steven Stolder
Greatest Hits (CD/DVD) Reviews:
DVD was a Ripoff!
2005-09-30 - When I saw this CD & DVD at Walmart I thought I had found a treasure. I could not wait to get home and watch Neil Young singing and playing some of my favorite songs. Man was I shocked when all I saw was a LP turning around. I was so upset that I could not even hear the music. I took it back and demanded my money back. Who ever is putting this mess out is ripping us off. If Neil knows about this, then I have lost a world of respect for him.
NOT DVD-Audio
2005-09-23 - The DVD disc in this package is not full DVD Audio that has been used for Greendale, Harvest, American Stars and Bars and On the Beach (ie MLP compression). The type of compression on this disc is the type that is present on movies. This is a very strange move as Neil is a big fan of the DVD Audio format, and I cannot understand why thislower quality format has been used at the sacrifice of the spinning vinal disc when a song is playing, when true DVD-Audio could have been so easily used. Does anyone know why this has been used and if the forthcoming Prairie Wind uses the true DVD Audio MLP compression
The music is good, but the DVD disc is fairly pointless
Try this on for size:
2005-03-09 - It's this simple...
1) If you are unfamiliar with the works of Neil Young and want a decent sampling of his music and don't care about higher quality recordings, skip this package and just get the standard one disc release
2) If you are unfamiliar with the works of Neil Young, want a decent sampling of his music and like higher quality sound recordings, get this package.
3) If you are a fan of Neil's, it boils down to this--If you like higher quality sound in your CD music, get this version. If you could care less about the higher quality, skip it...unless you are totally fanatical and are willing to pay $20+ for two videos.
That's about it in a nutshell.
Great CD/DVD combo
2005-02-24 - This album starts off w/one of my favorite Neil Young songs. Actually there's not a bad song on the whole thing. Although I do have to point out a review earlier said something along the lines of "what took Neil so long to put out a greatest hits album". Apparently they've never heard about Decade. A 3 disk set done earlier on in his career. And as far as the DVD bein not the best quality I have a couple of things to say on that. Since when was Neil about quality? Neil does what he feels right. Not what the industry wants. So if you're familiar w/Neil's craziness I would definatley recommend the DVD. And the second point is other than the videos (there's only two) does it really matter? I don't know if I was doin somethin wrong but other than the videos all I was doin was watchin a record player play the various songs on the album. Why do you need "great" quality for that? Although I do have to admit this set is missing a couple of songs that I would have liked to hear (My My Hey Hey and This Notes For You), but it does state on the album that the songs were chosen by requests, album purcheses, and most popular downloads. So if there is a song that you want on here that's not on, you only have yourself to blame for not asking to hear more of it. Anyway...buy the album w/the DVD. It's good stuff. If you want high quality DVD's buy Shindlers List. If you want older Neil buy Decade.
Whats Up With The DVD ??
2005-01-12 - I Love Neil Young. Have All His Stuff(Mostly On LP Bought When It Came Out). I Bought The CD/DVD Combo As A Holiday Gift For A Friend Who Is Not All That Familiar With Neil Young. Bought It At Walmart. The DVD Is Ridiculous. All It Is Is An Overhead View Of A Record On A Turntable. Same View For Every Song - Just A Different Record On The Turntable. I Thought DVD Would Be Concert Footage Or Interesting Visuals. If I Had Known It Was Going To Be So Lame I Would Have Saved My Money And Just Given My Friend The CD Itself Version Not The Combo Version. So Although I Love(And My Friend Did Too)The Music I Give This Only Two Stars Because Of The DVD. Feel I Got Ripped Off.
