Editorial Review:
DVD BONUS: Neil had cameras rolling when he cut the original masters for Greendale, and "Inside Greendale" shows him with Crazy Horse in the studio recording their actual takes. In the background behind the musicians are segments of the Greendale movie projected on walls and doors, and sometimes superimposed in front of them in the studio. The audio for this DVD mirrors the CD.

Greendale Reviews:
Greendale by Neil Young 4 Star Review
2009-12-09 - You'll either love it or hate it, but it is quintessential Neil Young. A welcome addition to my library!

Neil takes a dump,,,,,,,, 1 Star Review
2009-11-01 - I listened to this on a long road trip and was fascinated by it's mediocrity. Sounds like ol' Neil set up the band in Mom's garage on Saturday, tapped the keg and left the tape machine run. Only problem is Mom came home at sundown with the groceries and had a fit! So they had to tear down at the rough draft stage and hide the beer. The next day the beer was flat and they were way too hung over to continue, so they settled for this.
A rule of thumb is, when you have weak songs and bad singing you drown it out with drums. Neil does not disappoint in that regard, the mindless, droning snare drum sticks out like a mangled thumb but is still not enough to hide the half assed writing and piss poor singing.
Change the name to "Bob Young" and send this around as a demo and you'll get enough rejection slips to paper your wall.
I'd say "nice try" but I dont see much evidence of effort, this sounds like a bad demo from the past that would be trotted out to soil the reputation of someone who had become successful.
Of course this aint the first time ol' Neil dropped a turd in my lap, for every great song he wrote over his long career, there are at least ten that just filler. But the crap on this demo sinks to new depths and it is not fit to leave skid marks on the underwear of greatness.

The Heathen

No good. 1 Star Review
2009-09-09 - I'm a big fan of Neil Young. I have all of his albums, and I even enjoyed his bizarre 80's period. If you ignore the initial shock of hearing Neil tackling electronic music, you might find out that Trans and Landing on Water are great albums. So you can't accuse me of only liking his "mainstream" albums like Harvest or Comes A Time.

This, however, is the worst album of his entire career. Actually, you know what? I haven't listened to Chrome Dreams II or Living With War yet, so I can't say his entire career, but they would have to be unbelievably awful to compete with this. I'll give him some credit: this is a pretty ambitious project. It's too bad he didn't focus his attention on something that's a little more interesting and musically rewarding. This album is long, boring, stupid, cheesy, turgid, and just generally poorly thought out. I can't even imagine how embarrassingly unintentionally funny the stage show must have been, with the actors mouthing the words to the songs as he played them. The version I bought included a live acoustic performance he gave, which surprised me as it was even worse than the album proper because of the never-ending narration he gives for the story in between all the songs, which of course all suck.

I'm sorry to bash on NY like this, as he's one of my favorite songwriters. But I was, shall we say, surprised to find all the 5-star ratings on Amazon and the positive reviews it had gotten in Rolling Stone and other sources. If you're looking for Neil Young, start everywhere else but here. I'm not sure why this album got so much more press than other NY albums during this period (possibly because of the huge production involving the stage show), but don't believe the hype.

THE VERY BEST NEIL YOUNG ALBUM 5 Star Review
2009-04-25 - G'DAY ... SPELLO HERE FROM AUSTRALIA.

i've been a neil young fan for years,
& i own everything he's released, &,
i love it all, electric or acoustic,
or even the left of centre 'trans'.
that 'live in berlin' dvd is a classic.
i'd love a 'trans 2' album neil.

in my life neil gets a run pretty much every week
... but ... none of his albums ... none of them,
have been flogged to death by me,
more than this great great album 'greendale'.
... i just flat out love it.

both versions of this disc are brilliant,
chill out with the acoustic performance dvd,
or rock out with the 'inside greendale' dvd.

i have copies of it at home, in the car,
& also at work ... i can listen to it anytime.
it's funny how, as time's gone by,
& more have had a few listens to 'greendale',
the difference in reviews here on amazon.
from being canned & panned to now praised & loved.

i'm thrilled so many have found what i found
within this masterpiece from the great mr. young.

buy this ... give it a few listens
let it unfold & reveal it's beauty
... you'll be glad you did ...
& join myself & many others that
will forever keep this baby close by
imagining a nicer, simpler life ...
... down on the 'double E'.

thankyou neil ...
... thankyou for the amazing gift that is 'GREENDALE'.

Another Throwaway 1 Star Review
2008-09-20 - When measured against the standard of Neil Young's great albums ("Harvest," "After the Gold Rush," "Neil Young") this album comes up short--way short. It's just one of a long line of albums from the latter-day Young filled with monotonous, throwaway songs with crummy melodies and meaningless lyrics. It's a concept album, but it's hard to figure out what the concept is. The playing is loose, stodgy, and awful. Why so many Amazon.com reviewers give this album favorable reviews is beyond me. I guess a great artist can do no wrong. Not as bad as "Trans," but certainly worthy of comparison.
