Editorial Review:
Neil Young has long been one of rock's great romantics, mourning the utopian ideals of the "hippie" '60s and his vision of what America was…or at least should have been. In some ways, Greendale--which could be described as a "rock novel"--adds a mourning for humanity itself to the mix, as Young presents his vision of America 2003 via the story of a fictional family in a small California town. There's drama galore--a cop is killed by a drug dealer; Grandpa has a fatal heart attack while pointing a gun at a TV reporter--but most of these songs also work individually as terrific rock tunes. It's a more subdued Crazy Horse this time out, with only Neil on lead guitar and little of the distorted rage found on albums like Ragged Glory. But "Grandpa's Interview" has a gorgeous riff that recalls Zuma's "Don't Cry No Tears"; "Be the Rain" is a genuine Neil Young anthem about love, peace, saving the planet, and doing the right thing. A few pieces sound a tad meandering at first, which could lead one to conclude that Greendale is only a good Neil Young album. Repeated listening, however, should confirm that Greendale is a great Neil Young album. --Bill Holdship
Greendale (Bonus DVD) Reviews:
Another great one !!!!
2009-08-17 - What can you say about Neil Young....out of pitch but still in tune. This is just another fine work from a very talented man.
Greendale
2009-08-03 - Greendale being Young's 2003 release and is a concept album that can be comapared with The Wall by Pink Floyd and Autobahn by Kraftwerk and tells the story of a family in a fictitious town in California called Greendale. The album met good reviews and Allmusic gave it 3.5 stars and Rolling Stones gave it 4 so I also give 4 since a strong 3 feels a bit cheap. No lyrics are included but we get well-written liner notes for each track and some interesting sketches of the family. 4/5.
THE VERY BEST NEIL YOUNG ALBUM
2009-04-25 - G'DAY ... SPELLO HERE FROM AUSTRALIA.
i've been a neil young fan for years,
& i own everything he's released, &,
i love it all, electric or acoustic,
or even the left of centre 'trans'.
that 'live in berlin' dvd is a classic.
i'd love a 'trans 2' album neil.
in my life neil gets a run pretty much every week
... but ... none of his albums ... none of them,
have been flogged to death by me,
more than this great great album 'greendale'.
... i just flat out love it.
both versions of this disc are brilliant,
chill out with the acoustic performance dvd,
or rock out with the 'inside greendale' dvd.
i have copies of it at home, in the car,
& also at work ... i can listen to it anytime.
it's funny how, as time's gone by,
& more have had a few listens to 'greendale',
the difference in reviews here on amazon.
from being canned & panned to now praised & loved.
i'm thrilled so many have found what i found
within this masterpiece from the great mr. young.
buy this ... give it a few listens
let it unfold & reveal it's beauty
... you'll be glad you did ...
& join myself & many others that
will forever keep this baby close by
imagining a nicer, simpler life ...
... down on the 'double E'.
thankyou neil ...
... thankyou for the amazing gift that is 'GREENDALE'.
Crazy(horse) like a fox!
2009-01-04 - I first heard Sun Green while riding through Knoxville Tenn. on the fm. I was hooked and immediately ordered the album. I was blown away and still am! I originally thought of the songs as one story, just broken into chapters. But now I see the songs for what they are. Great ones that stand on their own. Devil's Sidewalk's riff is forever branded on my brain, and Leave The Driving's intro is pure simplistic genius! Carmichael must be kin to Cortez, and Bandit is stripped down confession. And if you make it through Sun Green and her screaming megaphone (turn it up!) and get a chance to Be the Rain, you're a permanent resident of Greendale.
Met Neil Young on St. Thomas Virgin Islands
2008-12-25 - Met Neil with his young daughter on St. Thomas in the mid 80's and will never forget it. A very gentle man, so attentive and loving. His music will last for the ages.
