Live In San Francisco Reviews:
Live Rust can't hold a candle to this 5 Star Review
2009-12-19 - As protean an effort as Live Rust is, it pales by comparison to this disc. Pity he can't seem to get Archives to measure up to the bootlegs from other sources. In any case, as the product descriptions indicate, this is one of the complete shows from the Cow Palace from which Live Rust was cobbled together. Neil muffs an occasional line, but the intensity here is astounding and the renditions on this show of his war chestnuts throw sparks and spit fire. The disc sounds simply amazing, again leaving you to wonder what it is with him that he can never seem to get an even keel on the aesthetics of his records. For a guy who claims that sound matters, you'd wish he'd sit down and listen to this.
Quite honestly, I don't know that I'll ever go listen to Live Rust again. This trumps it. Has anyone got a similar disc or two of the shows that produced Time Fades Away? I am very interested. I saw a lot of those shows, and TFA didn't capture any of them. Let me know.

great show 4 Star Review
2009-04-19 - While this is the same show used for Live Rust, the sound is cleaner and there is an extra track. The only complaint is that the pictures Amazon shows indicate that this is the album with Pearl Jam, when it isn't. Its Crazy Horse that backs NY on this one. It is an import too.

Good but here's the story behind this CD....... 4 Star Review
2009-02-07 - In 1978, I was fortunate to receive a copy of a soundboard recording of the Rust Never Sleeps tour at the Los Angeles Forum. This was an incredible, unedited raw recording of the full show prior to any of the Rust releases. The tape eventually was destroyed in my tape player but Live Rust was released around that time. Unfortunately Live Rust is a heavily produced and edited recording so it did not capture the same atmosphere and feel of the Forum recording.

I ran across this release on Amazon and thought that this would come close to the soundboard recording. I read the reviews and purchased this without giving it much thought. I received the CD set yesterday and as other reviews have alluded to, this is a bootleg recording but more on that below. The tri-fold, digi-pack sleeve is well designed and actually looks more professional than many official releases. The back artwork even contains a UPC barcode so I can see how on-line stores such as Amazon were deceived into believing that this was an official release.

So where did this recording come from? Another reviewer mentioned that this was the soundtrack off of the Rust Never Sleeps DVD. Well, that person is essentially correct. I believe some clever (or not so clever because I assume this is common) bootlegger lifted the audio track from the DVD, maybe remixed it and burned it to a CD. This is why the audio quality is relatively good. Both the Live in San Francisco CD and Rust Never Sleep DVD recordings were from the same concert at the Cow Palace on October 22, 1978.

If you own the Rust DVD then you already have the music that is contained on this CD set. If you don't own the DVD and want the audio CD then you have at least 2 options. First you can purchase this CD assuming you can still find it. Second, you can purchase the Rust DVD for less money and if you are technically adept, you can extract the audio tracks from the DVD and burn them onto your own CD. Had I known what I know now, I would have done the latter. In any case, I do enjoy the Live in San Francisco CD more than Live Rust because of the unedited versions of Hurricane and Cortez as well as the inclusion of the 2 songs missing from Live Rust.

great stuff neil 5 Star Review
2009-01-19 - I think live at san francisco is the best bootleg cd I have ever bought. The sound is great. I am a Huge Neil Fan and I think, I have every cd made. I think this is twice is better then LIVE RUST but similiar. So If you cant find this one buy LIVE RUST. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY

Very Worth It for Neil Fans 4 Star Review
2009-01-06 - If, like I was, you're concerned about purchasing "Live Rust" again but in different packaging, you're partially correct. You can go to "neilyoung.com", click on "Archives", then "Discography 1" and finally "Live Rust" and discover that half of the songs were performed at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on 10/22/78. The remaining 8 were performed during the same incredible tour but in 4 different cities between October 4th and the 19th. "Thrasher" (in which he temporarily forgets the lyrics) and "Welfare Mothers" are excluded from "Live Rust". It's also worth it for me to have the other 8 songs performed at the Cow Palace that were performed in different cities on "Live Rust". The packaging is great and the sound quality is good. A must, in my opinion, for any Young fan. It's too bad we couldn't buy the 10 songs individually and exclude the 8 already on "Live Rust".
