Editorial Review:
One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the rock era. Solo. Acoustic. January 19, 1971. Live At Massey Hall, the legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in highresolution stereo, in this CD+DVD package (also as a solo CD). The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). Live At Massey Hall is a newly mined rock gem.

Description of Live at Massey Hall (CD/DVD):
"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

Live at Massey Hall (CD/DVD) Reviews:
Refreshing and powerful 5 Star Review
2009-11-28 - I am buying this CD for my cousin in England for XMas. I've had this CD/DVD for sometime now. My sister had it before me. That was when I first heard it. I was immediately struck with the sincerity and power of it. I was over in England playing my cousin's guitar and she is a big Neil fan too. I played a number of tunes including a couple Neil Young tunes. She and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to music even though she is an ocean and a continent away. I like that. This CD (and DVD) are tied with "Comes a time" as my favorite Neil young CD's. This CD is very refreshing especially in a time when there is so much over production and so little space in some of today's music. To hear how much beauty one voice and one instrument can have when a true artist is at work is refreshing and powerful. Neil's guitar playing is right on and beautiful. His voice also right on pitch and time, right in the groove. This is all just coming from one guy. No extra stuff or help with modern equipment. Just one guy with either a guitar or a piano and it is really wonderful.

Magnetic Neil 4 Star Review
2009-07-04 - The CD is rather dark, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it. The music is the same great Neil folk rock. I like to see who is playing the music! Brings back the hippie days!

At Last! 5 Star Review
2009-06-24 - Neil Young was such a huge influence on me as a youth. After The Goldrush
was my personal favorite and I was not a huge fan of the orchestral sounds on Harvest, though the songwriting and melodies were excellent.
Point here is... I also owned a double-vinyl bootleg copy of a live performance which pretty much has the same playlist as Massey Hall.
I treasured it for years and still have it. However, the sound quality was
nowhere near the Massey Hall quality. This is a true nugget of pure gold!
It's my new treasure.

Good! 5 Star Review
2009-03-25 - Good performance and sound. Much better than all the bootlegs floating around for the past 25+ years.

The Dream is Real! 5 Star Review
2009-02-22 - Not much to say, music is pretty personal... but this CD/DVD set is AWESOME. I'm not usually to into Music DVDs unless they're documentaries and it helps if they have a blues player. This DVD though is worth it, the mastering is very artistic and the sound quality it phenomenal for a live recording. There is a lot more than nostalgia here. Neil released a lot of love into the world not just music, I just want to say thanks for both!
