Editorial Review:
Now greet the arrival of 'Sugar Mountain- Live At Canterbury House 1968,' another singular installment in the continuing Neil Young Archives Performance Series. On this CD+DVD set, recorded in Ann Arbor, MI, November 9-10, just days before the release of Young's self titled solo debut, one of the greatest singer-songwriters in rock history is heard solo and acoustic at the height of one of the must tumultuous and creative periods ever experienced both in music and culture. This set contains a CD featuring 14 tracks, a DVD disc including a high resolution audio mix of the album plus a 5 minute trailer for the archives set.
Sugar Mountain-Live At Canterbury House 1968 (CD/DVD-A) Reviews:
Great album! Neil Young At Canterbury House
2009-07-09 - Forty years after its initial recording, `Sugar Mountain - Live At Canterbury House 1968' gets an official release. The performance achieved notoriety because of the single version of "Sugar Mountain" which appeared first as a B-Side to the 1970 single, "The Loner." It reappeared as a B-Side to "Cinnamon Girl" in 1970 and then on the double disc greatest hits `Decade.' Surviving as a bootleg for years, this album presents the entire concert with the omnipresent stage banter by Neil Young.
The performances throughout this concert are jaw-droppingly earnest and endearing. This set seems a lot more intimate than the previously reissued "Massey Hall" recording. It has been written that Neil had to be coaxed out of his hotel bed to perform that night. His stage dialog is an indication of his nervousness, as he rambles on about everything from working in a bookstore to an impromptu mystery music quiz surrounding "Classical Gas."
Young's work with Buffalo Springfield is well represented; he performs "Mr. Soul," "Expecting To Fly," "Broken Arrow" and gives "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" a goose bump-inducing read. The majority of the performance is dedicated to material that would later appear on his S/T debut and subsequent releases such as `After The Gold Rush' (Birds). `Neil Young - Live At Canterbury House' depicts a young artist at the precipice of greatness and is definitely worth a listen.
DVD is not true DVD-A but DVD Video with 24/96 res. audio
2009-07-06 - As other reviewers have pointed out, the DVD in this package is not a concert film. It is a high resolution version of the audio on the CD. It is not, however, true DVD-A. To playback DVD-A, you need a special decoder in your player. Luckily, this DVD is in the DVD Video format which means that anyone with a standard DVD player can hear the high resolution sound. Go to the "Set Up" menu on the DVD, it will explain the technical aspects of the format. This is not hype! Even a casual comparison between the audio on the CD and DVD will reveal how much more life and music there is in the DVD version. So don't throw a tantrum and break the DVD across your knee. Listen to the disc. If you already like the music here, I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised!
Ripped off!
2009-05-29 - I can't believe my eyes when I slipped the DVD into the DVD player and there's no video. What is with that!? When I bought this package, it was shown as a CD/DVD and I expected a video. As Neil Young would say himself, "What a ripoff!". Only this time, Amazon and Neil are doing the ripping.
Not as good as "Massey Hall" and overpriced (about the 2LP version)
2009-05-14 - The songs are not as good as on "Live at Massey Hall", and the raps in between take too much time. Overpriced too: $60 or so.
Audio DVD?!?! Oh, you mean a 70 minute screensaver
2009-04-03 - Love NY but am really disappointed because the DVD included is not what I (and most) people expected. No concert film, just a still with some nice enhanced audio. Should of saved my money to buy Archives 1.
Still Neil sounds great.....
