Time Fades Away Reviews:
Time Never Fades Away
2009-02-15 - One of his best, dark period or not. You can always count on raw and honest from Neil. Have the LP, from when it came out and will NEVER part with it
Good but not one of his best
2009-01-26 - I saw a concert in Long Beach during the 1973 tour when this was recorded and looked forward to the album. That said, I sold it it to used record store after about a year (along with Harvest which grew lessi interesting for other reasons). The title track is great, but compared to his still imporant post-Harvest, mid 70s albums-- Tonight's the Night, Stars and Bars, or Zuma (Let alone Rust Never Sleeps or his first solo album--albums I never would have sold and still have, it's not the classic many claim in my view. The sound was crappy as I recall. If it gets rereleased I will download the title song and Don't Be Denied and leave it at that but in this case I think Neil Young realizes it was not up to his level overall.
This is the litmus test for Neil Young's music
2009-01-01 - I bought Time Fades Away in 1981 or '82 for about $1.99 at a used album store. I was about 13 or 14 years old and was beginning to get into music, buying albums of bands I knew and liked, mostly british Invasion, 60's and 70's rock and roll. I was tuned in to Neil at a very early age, listening to CSNY with my dad (Marakesh Express was my favorite as a youngster) who had deja vu, 4 way street, csny on LP.
Anyway, Time Fades Away was my introduction into Neil's solo stuff and I loved it from beginning to end. I think I played that record, as well as a Crosby-Nash album (Immigration man was on it...) and Heavy Cream all the time for a few years.
I love Neil's music, but some was better than others in my mind. Much of the stuff I casually heard, the popular Neil, was good, if not great.
For some reason, when albums gave way to cassette and then to CD, I got rid of my album collection. I can kick myself for some of the great, obscure stuff I let go; but what's the sense cryin' over spilt milk, right.
For years I casually looked for Time Fades Away on CD, expecting to find it in a bargain bin the way I found the album. I would talk with friends about Neil music and most had never heard of TFA and noone had it in their collections.
Now I am 40 years old and I really miss this piece of work. I mean it was my youth. It was my favorite Neil. And I truly believe it to be some of the best written and played music ever. I've listened to the International Harvesters, Shocking Pink, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, Unplugged, Crazy Horse, and on.
From my point of view, everything I hear from Neil needs to pass the TFA litmus test. It is organic, creative, musically potent, original, and seemingly complete. For me, Harvest Moon is similar in its completeness and beauty, yet different.
I will continue to wait for TFA to be released in a current format, rather than steal it. I will listen to it if available to me; but I will not buy it unless Neil benefits. It will certainly be worth the wait.
That being said, I'm not fond of waiting for something that had such a positive effect on my musical life; But I do trust that Neil has his reasons.

time fades away (just another opinion....for what it's worth
2007-12-26 - I'm nearly turning fifty. Learned to play the guitar when i was fifteen.
Bought me some records to excercise my guitar skill. Time fades away being one of them.learned it by heart and....... SOLD THE RECORD. How stupid can you get.!!!!
Just recently managed to get back hold of it. listened to it over and over again and yes, the music still stands as a rock. I got all records of Neil now and 'time fades away' is surely one of his top records. Personally i rate it higher than Harvest, mainly for one reason ,its consistent quality. On Harvest, chosen by many as Neil's classic, some of the songs struck me a bit too folky. For those of you who like intimate songs I would say try your luck with Prairie Wind. For those who love some dirty electric work give it a go with 'Zuma' or 'Sleeps with angels'. If you want to kick the world a conscience don't hesitate to listen to 'Living with war'..... but if you like the mistery round the Mona Lisa painting.... then every once in a while give a little time to time......
